Why are you being snarky? They didn't take a knee. They played for the block. It didn't work. Michigan State did the same thing against Michigan. It worked. Ithaca beat Union a few years ago thanks to a botched punt snap. It's about as likely as running a punt back 90 yards for a TD or going 90 yards in 2 plays

My only question there is why not try for the blocked punt with some time on the clock at least?  I assume if you block it (and don't score) you still have 20 plus seconds to run 2 or 3 Plays?

So wait, are you saying they let the clock run down after the third down play? Like, they didn't call it when they could have?

Machiavelli

Utah has this right. It was a few bad moves in a row. A timeout should've been called with like 1:35 on the clock. After that, most likely the same result but maybe, just maybe you get the ball back for 1-2 low percentage plays. Rushing 11 is fine with 3 seconds left. There was 11 seconds left. I'm no math genius( well maybe I am, but...)1-2 low percentage opportunities > 0 opportunities.

It doesn't take away from Ithaca leaving it all out on the field. It was a very impressive performance. But they didn't score until there was less than 2 minutes left. They had some momentum FINALLY. The coaching decisions on the last 4 plays ensured there would be no final opportunity.

Machiavelli

And trust me, there isn't a single Ithaca player or fan, including you, that wouldn't want 1 play at the end from >= 80 yards.

Yea the live feed doesn't show the clock and the announcers are students that aren't always clear.  I believe they called the TO on third down, but not on 2nd down which would have saved 30 seconds or so.

No it wouldn't. 40 seconds are going to run off the clock after any play IC doesn't call a TO on. It doesn't matter the order.

The order doesn't matter but they didn't use one timeout either way

The play by play shows they only had one timeout left when the drive began. They used all their TOs

Machiavelli

They had 1 timeout and the order DOES matter. Under today's circumstances, a fumble on 2nd or 3rd down leaves you with 1:00 or :35(roughly). Calling a TO after 1st, a fumble would be 1:20 or :55(roughly). Big difference.

It didn't happen but it's textbook clock management. You extend the game. Then just field the damn punt and take a shot. Send 10. Player 11 probably tripped the guy who coulda blocked it anyway.

As I said, EVERYONE not routing for Brockport would have loved 1 last play.

According to the live video, they had two timeouts and only used one on third down..  Then brockport punted on fourth and time ran out on that play (Ithaca didn't have a returner)

Huge interception just now by Ithaca in the Alfred red zone, returned into well inside Alfred territory.  Alfred currently up 6-0 early in the 2nd quarter.

Will note Ithaca's already had 2 personal fouls on defense, 1 which offset an Alfred holding penalty.

BomberJeff

Alfred up 13-0, 8:55 to go in the 2nd.  Ithaca muffs a punt and Alfred recovers it, and turns it into a 2nd touchdown 3 plays later.

Jonny Utah

Both teams sloppy with horrible QB play.  IC picks one off in the red zone and then Alfred picks it off right after.  Both on Bad decision.  Even Alfred's last td was loafers in there

Ithaca has a 25 yard field goal attempt to end the first half go bad as the holder fumbles the snap and can't recover for a good hold in time.

Halftime: Alfred 13 Ithaca 0.

EDIT: Dan Swanstrom clearly not happy.  Answers 2 questions with the WICB sideline reporter with roughly 1 sentence lines, calling this one of the worst halves of football he's been involved in.

BomberJeff

Ithaca gets the first score of the 2nd half.  They went for it on 4th and 10 on the 20 and got the first down, and then Issac D'Haiti runs it in 1 play later.

Alfred 13 Ithaca 7, 8:36 to go in the 3rd quarter.
