Did Union just get a down taken away by the refs? Offensive holding on 1st&10, ref walks off the 10 yds and says 2&20?  Am I missing something?

Bryce Morrison finds Jayden Gavidia for a 26 yard touchdown pass.

Alfred moves in front 20-17 with 7:51 left.  Nearly a 6 minute drive to go 78 yards there.

Couple Things:

1) Bill, I wasn't listening to the broadcast, but with live stats, if a play was accidentally mishandled, they utilize a placeholder like the one I saw.  I'm sure if there was a mistake on the field, it would've been caught and corrected, as incorrect downs are correctable errors during the same set of downs, even if initially misrepresented.

2) Why did Husson score that last TD?  Union stated through not taking timeouts that the game was done.  Not classy, and that team needs to show a bit more composure generally with the penalties and unsportsmanlike issues seen during the day.

Husson wins it 21-7.  (That includes an ice touchdown they run from the 1 yard line with 10 seconds on the clock, rather than run out the clock; nice.)  Tough loss for the Dutchmen - gave up 14 points on turnovers in 1Q, and can't quite make up the difference.  D looked tough, holding Husson to ~200 yards.

BomberJeff

Ithaca decides to go for it on 4th adn 10 at the 50, Fron does find a receiver after a lot of running around... only for it to be called just out of bounds.  Alfred takes over up 3 with 4 minutes remaining.

Right on, Frank - that was a live stats good, not a ref error.

And yeah, I didn't get that last TD.  Comes off as pretty insecure - and unnecessary for a team that strikes me as having some legit talent.

Gutsy but not smart down 3.  Try to pin them.  You have timeouts, so you can preserve field position with time left potentially.  No matter where on the field you are, two first downs end the game.  The risk/reward on a 4th and 10 there is very low on the reward side chances.

BomberJeff

Ithaca will get one last chance: 45 seconds, needs 72 yards for the end zone, no timeouts...

And on the very first play, the Saxons come up with the interception.  Only turnover of the entire game.  Ithaca's home opener streak will end at 19.

FINAL- Alfred 20 Ithaca 17.

Husson has a solid team. Easy to see how they would dominate their league. Union played well at times especially on defense but turnovers and penalties hurt badly, something we didn't see much of last season. Maybe the long road trip was a factor? I'm still confused about the possible loss of a down. It was crucial because Union was driving inside Husson territory for a tying score. They turned it over on downs. I'd love to see an explanation. Unfortunately the Husson video feed which was excellent, cut out early in the 3rd and didn't come back. Good luck to Husson. The Dutchman have lots of corrections to make but they showed signs.

Brutal.  (And someone should tell Alfred's #15 that he looked like a complete tool taunting IC after his teammate made a great play to ice the game.)

Agreed Frank.  I know you want to try and give your offense some confidence but when you do have a special teams and defense capable of pinning them, I think you have to go that route.  Matters for not in the end though.

This is the play sequence I question taken from the official play by play.....................................1st and 10 at HUS26    Nick Cascione pass incomplete to Chris Nicholas, PENALTY UNION holding (Ryan Hanney) 10 yards to the HUS36, NO PLAY.
1st and 20 at HUS36    2nd and 20.
2nd and 20 at HUS36    Nick Cascione pass complete to Dante Cioffi for 9 yards to the HUS27 (Quan Soyini).
3rd and 11 at HUS27    Nick Cascione pass incomplete to A. Kaplanovich (Jean Gabriel).
4th and 11 at HUS27    Nick Cascione pass incomplete (L. Guillaume).

Yes, and it's not the first time I've seen live stats operators cover an error like their own misentered play, in such a way.  They may have forgotten to press enter for a preceding or subsequent play to the penalty and had to account for it.

Disagree completely. The Bombers under Mike Welch were cautious to a fault. You're the underdog, at home. Be aggressive. You don't have any guarantees you'll see the ball again (or, like the Bombers' punt in the 4th against Cortland last season, if you'll get it back down two scores). If I'm Dan Swanstrom, a punt there just tells everyone it's business as usual. I like the call

That's an interesting thought.  I kinda thought the same thing about a Union play call today - fake punt from their own 30 in the first half, down 7-0.  Seemed like a nice statement playcall by a coach trying to build an aggressive mentality, even if it was dubious as a pure analytical matter.  (That play call worked perfectly for U, as it turned out: a nice 40 yard gain.)
