I gotta question NPU's play calling.  Crazy!  They've got a WR lining up at QB for 2/3 of the plays in a wildcat formation and flinging the ball and getting intercepted, rather than playing their straight up offense with a very athletic, experienced QB in Shelby Wood.  Seems very desperate.

North Park wasn't running a wildcat, Mugsy. Coach Pethtel was alternating his QBs, Shelby Wood (#5) and Ronn Rataczyk (#12). Neither one ever lined up as a WR.

Thanks for the clarification.  Like I said... I only listened for about 15 minutes and was going off what the announcers were saying.  I heard Wildcat and Double Wing mentioned.  Either way it was not the offense NPU has been running this year. Swider mentioned after the game that Wheaton had to throw out the defensive game plan and draw something up on the sideline.

Either way it is puzzling that NPU was not using Shelby as much.

Ratajczyk actually did about as well as Wood. He was more efficient (8-14; Wood was 8-20), and unlike Wood he didn't take a sack. Wood, on the other hand, didn't throw any picks, and he did engineer the 84-yard TD drive and threw the scoring pass to Evan Christiansen.

Ratajczyk is a junior. It'll be his team next season. Given that Wheaton was running away with the ballgame right out of the gate -- it was 20-0 when Ratajczyk made his first appearance with 4:41 left in the first quarter -- I thought it made sense to give Ratajczyk plenty of experience against a top-notch team rather than garbage time against scrubs at the end of the game, which is what he usually gets.

Yes, Pethtel threw some formation wrinkles into the gameplan. Kudos to him for making Swider work for his paycheck. ;)

Make sense.  Thanks for the insight.

Son of Tailgater

Mugsy, Gregory Sager and everyone, thank you for your updates on here. I will become more involved once my youth football team ends their season in 2 weeks. I check these from my Blackberry during and between the games but haven't figured out how to post?! I should figure it out soon. Thanks again.

Mugsy

Looking forward to reviewing any in game comments later tonight.  I won't be available to post here during the games as I'll be at the Wheaton/Augie game.  I'll post my thoughts on the game later tonight.

Mr. Ypsi

A stunner so far in Bloomington - Millikin leads 17-0 at the half!

IWU actually leads in total yards, first downs and TOP (unfortunately, also in penalty yards).  Millikin had one long drive for a TD; otherwise blocked a punt for a short field, leading to a FG, and had a 73-yard pick six.  (Both teams have had probable TDs stymied by an interception.)

Mr. Ypsi

IWU just dodged a bullet.  With 6 and a half left in the third, Rooney threw his second INT, which was returned to the Titan 11.  3 plays later it was 4th and 10.  The FG attempt from the 11 was SHORT (how can a kicker be short from the 11? :o) - score is still 17-0, with the Titans dominating everything but the scoreboard.

Congrats to Wheaton on a tough victory today.

Great pass play.   These are the games that define your team.  Bravo!
