In Season Tournaments

D3 schools are involved in the incredible amount of 83 Tournaments this weekend ....   here are some of the interesting ones:

Provident Pride of Maryland Tourney   -  8 D3 schools from Maryland representing several conferences - every state should do this!!

Al Van Wie Tourney  -  Wooster hosts St Thomas, Carnegie Mellon, and Heidelberg

Albion Tourney  -  Albion Hosts Bluffton, Depauw, and Edgewood

Carthage College Tipoff  -  Carthage has Aurora, UW Platteville, UW Whitewater

Gettysburg Tourney  -  Gettysburg has Catholic, Messiah, and Wittenberg

Illinois College Tourney  -  Illinois College hosts Milwaukee Engr, Nebraska Wesleyan, and Simpson

Scotty Wood   -  Moravian has Mulenburg, Oneonta, and William Paterson

UD Tipoff   -  Dallas, Rust, Austin, Sul Ross

Don Glick  -  Bridgewater hosts Averett East Mennonite, Wesley

Chicago Midway  -  Chicago has Earlham, Southwestern, Rose Hulman

Lee Pfund  -  Wheaton hosts McMurry, Ohio Northern, Trine

Titan Classic has IWU, Wash U, Ohio Wesleyan, and J&W

Many others have three decent teams and a podunk,  and others have a good championship game with apparent lopsided winners the first night....

Williams will play LAsell or Cortland State
Widener may play Rowan
North Central could play Mississippi College

The Carthage tourney is in a classic format, as it involves two WIAC teams, but the Lee Pfund Classic is a traditional-format tourney, in spite of the fact that it uses the word "classic" in its name.

Gordon has a tourney this weekend where they'll likely play Baruch in the final game.  Not the flashiest of match-ups, but it should tell us a lot about both squads.

During the audiocast of Wooster's game vs. Wilmington last night, head coach Steve Moore suggested that Wooster's E.M. "Mose" Hole/Kiwanis Classic was one of if not the longest-running small college tournament.  The Mose Hole Classic has been in continuous existence since January 1964 (six years after Coach Hole's retirement), this year's edition being the 48th Classic.  

Does anyone know of a longer-running holiday tournament?  Even if it's not 48 years old, tell us about your school's long-running tournament.

The Chase Scholarship Tournament involving eight schools from around Rochester, NY has been in existence since 1966-1967.  The event was renamed the "Wendy's College Classic" a couple years ago.  It used to take place in early January, but it happened during the first semester this season.

When I played in the late 60's, the highlight of the season was a the Christmas Time tourney at Albany State...  the Capital District Tourney....  Featuring the 4 capital district schools Union, RPI, Siena, and Albany State....  it would be a sellout every year, and RPI would always be the underdog, Siena usually the favorite, but wow, talk about pumped up to play!!!!   Of course first Siena, and later Albany State moved to D1, and the tourney ended, probably in the early 80's...  wonder if Magicman could research its end...??

I don't know too much about the Capital District Christmas Tournament as it was not something I ever attended. It also wasn't promoted in the newspapers up in my neck of the woods.

I'll have to talk with my attorney, Joe Cardany, who is  probably the best player to ever play at Union. Joe, who graduated in 1981, broke all of Jimmy Tedisco's scoring records and is still #3 on their all time scoring list. If there had been a 3 point shot when Joe played he'd be at the top of the list, as his long range jump shot accounted for a sizeable number of his field goals. He should at least be able to confirm if the tournament made it into the 80's.

good magic, thanks.....  I likely just missed Joe Cardany, as my last seaqson coaching was 76-77, and we moved to Michigan in mid 78... will be interested to hear what info he can supply...   ask him if Bill Scanlon was still coaching Union when he played?

I know Scanlon was still there as Joe has told me a number of Scanlon stories over the years. Joe had nothing but good things to say about him. As a matter of fact I'm watching Scanlon's assistant when Joe was there, Bill Carmody, now the head coach at Northwestern, on ESPN2 as I type this. Northwestern is on the road taking on #11 Purdue and Carmody's got the Wildcats within 6 pts trying for the upset.

Scanlon and Murphy (Hamilton) took me out one night when the NCAA's were in Philly... there's alot I DON'T remember about that night.. thank goodness...   those two were a little more than I could keep up with....

    I've got ECAC bball media guides from 65-69 if your interested in any info when you played(rosters, schedules,coaches, scores,etc.) I remember the coach Billy Kalbaugh from somewhere(St. Bonaventure? player).

Billy Kalbaugh was RPI Coach Bill Kalbaugh's son... he was the point guard at St Bonaventure when Bob Lanier was there... one year ahead of me in age, and they were undefeated until the NCAA semis in 1970....  Billy coached for awhile, I believe at Gannon, and now is the National Director of Coaches vs Cancer.  HisPop, Bill Kalbaugh, coached in 50's 60's and 70's at RPI-- I played for him and was his assistant for 5 years

Ronk.. thanks for the offer, but you keep that material with what I imagine is a nice collection...  if we ever end up at a game together, I'll remind you to bring it....  but if you check out 68-69 and it has RPI stuff, some sophomore named Kirkpatrick averaged about 9 a game coming off the bench as a sixth man!!   The old ICAC conference....   It says that Kirkpatrick guy weighed 178.  :)What are the odds he still under 180? It also says he's from Pittsburgh, which explains why u were asking about Catholic's Pete Shramm from Sewickley. My wife's from Mt. Lebanon and I went to a couple of Dapper Dan games back in those days - 1 that Maurice Lucas played in and one with Magic Johnson.
  Almost made it to the Hope-Scranton NCAA semifinal in 2006 but my wife was ill at the time and couldn't make the trip. Maybe they'll meet again 1 of these years.
