From the NAIA map you can delete Dana College from the GPAC...that school closed their doors on July 1st after a sale of the school to investors fell through.  The GPAC will also lose the NAIA national champ next year when Sioux Falls goes over to D2.

The DAC should be losing Minot St, Black Hills St, and South Dakota Mines to D2 in the next year.

Jason Dannelly, the "Pat Coleman" of the NAIA equivalent of D3sports.com was a Dana alum.

Aren't you still an alum if your school closes?

Once an alum, always an alum. In fact several schools in the midwest still have web pages run by alumni. This is especially true with the smaller schools where classmates created close relationships.

I personally think growth in the Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona area would be great for us. As anyone can see there is a significant lack of (football) programs in the area. I feel like filling this gap could really allow more unique pre-season games.

I know nothing of D-2 or NAIA but my feeble mind tells me growth here (the region) could result in some decent pulls to local College games.

... and more unique regular- season games, too. ;)

When you are looking for growth, you gotta see what schools are out there.

To get teams into D-III, the schools have to come from somewhere.  Those places include the NCCAA, NAIA and the USCAA.  The only schools to reclassify to D-III from another NCAA division in the last 3-4 years are Birmingham-Southern (AL) and Centenary.  Centenary will be a provisional NCAA member in year #1 of 4 and a member of the ASC next season.  (I do not think that Centenary will be eligible for post-season until 2015-16.)

Frankly, there are a lot of D-1 schools that should back off their D-1 dreams.

True, but the alums scream whenever someone even thinks about moving away.  So they bleed hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars a year for the 'prestige' of being D1 and getting on regional TV once in a while.

Well, I don't the schools like Savannah State, SIU - Edwardsville, or NJIT even make the regional networks!

As a former athlete at Georgia Southern I can vouch for Savannah State, if they went D3 they would never have the opportunity to play GSU or schools like GSU. Though they dont get to play on TV or even really get noticed during conference (they were 30 mins away and I couldnt even tell you their conference) but they did get profile games in preseason.

I think this is a real problem we have to overcome.

NJIT moved to D1 for their soccer and volleyball programs, the rest can't compete and they were not eligible to be grandfathered.  They need to make a decision to either fully commit to D1 or drop down a division or two.

Preseason games are televised? I could see televising a non-conference game, but televising a scrimmage or an exhibition seems excessive.
