DePauw Never Quits

Paul Maguire will be doing the color commentary.

The same Paul Maguire that ABC/ESPN exiled to a cherry picker on the sideline a few years ago because he's terrible?

Did you major in Negativity as an undergrad?  I mean, really, have you broadcast 4 Super Bowls?

It'd be nice to welcome this new friend to our rivalry, not demean him.  I think it's terrific.

I think this game is presented best with an apt play by play announcer and a color analyst that is familiar with the teams and players.

I'm sure there was a time when Maguire was good at this job, but it's been a long while.  He was a healthy contributor to the single most unwatchable booth I've ever seen do football on television (the abhorrent Patrick/Theismann/Maguire booth on Sunday night ESPN games).  There's a reason Maguire isn't doing color work for ESPN/ABC anymore and I'm pretty sure it isn't because he chose to be calling UFL games on HDNet.  That is not a professional move indictative of somebody who is on his game.

He's 72 yrs old, chief.  As someone who used to work in the TV biz, I can tell you your options these days are slim post-60 (even, in my case, post-40).   So don't begrudge his willingness to keep working.

That will be great...will add some flavor to the broadcast...

You missed my point completely.  My reservation has nothing to do with the man's age or whether or not he wants to keep working in the business.  My reservation is about the quality of his product...which hasn't been very good for quite some time now.

Sure, he's got a recognizable name and he's done some really big time work in the past, but it's a lot like the Rams getting Joe Namath.  Sure, he's Joe Namath...but he's not Joe Namath anymore.

dumb question from an outside fan: prior to last season, was Wabash and DePauw ever in the same conference? It seems odd that two long-time rival teams were from two different conferences all these years.

Excellent question.  Wabash and DePauw were charter members of the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference back in 1987.  The two were conference rivals for 12 years until DePauw left the ICAC for the SCAC in 1999 for reasons that only Bob Bottoms fully understand.

As I'm sure you've read, DePauw will be joining Wabash in the NCAC next year, with football affiliation coming the following year in 2012...which is a terrific move for all parties involved.

what about prior to 1987?

Does the Monon railroad connect the two schools?

I can't speak for DePauw, but prior to the ICAC, I don't believe Wabash was affiliated with a conference.

And yes, the Monon RR serviced both colleges back in the day.

Titan Q

Legendary broadcaster Art Kimball (DePauw '55), who was known primarily across the state of Illinois, passed away this week.  Today someone sent this link to me of Art broadcasting the 1985 Monon Bell game...

Thought you might enjoy the old footage.

Below are a couple articles written this week about Art...

Back in the 60s, DePauw was in a conference w/ Indiana State, Butler, Evansville and, Ball State, among others -- which had much to do w/ some of the sub-500 records posted during that era.
