49 - 7. Great game, Johnnies. And thats the lights switching off on another fantastic Johnnie regular season

Always a bittersweet day for me.  Post-season is awesome but the reality is that football season is winding down.

Auggies will get the win and BU finish at 4-4 in the league.  That's the surprise of the season.

What a game I am going to need some time to recharge! Great atmosphere and the crowd was in to the game.  My voice is cooked.

Yes, the Auggie/Bethel game was a fun game to watch today - congrats to the Auggies. Augsburg pulled out all the stops today, a reverse on a kickoff return, a hook and ladder, on-side kick, a double pass play (which didn't complete because the first receiver had a knee down when he caught the lateral), and the best one of the day a lateral to the tackle for a td at the end of the first half.

I don't know why Steve Johnson/Bethel was so conservative this year. I didn't see every game, 6 I believe, but everyone I went to they didn't try any type of trick play, not even a reverse. Past years he has run misdirection plays and reverses, but not this year.

I want to comment about a play in the 4th quarter. Scott was attempting to set up a screen which was covered well by Bethel, so Scott threw the ball at a lineman, which hit him and fell incomplete. The refs threw a flag and initially announced that it was an illegal touching penalty, which it obviously was. Then the refs huddled and decided to pick up the flag, saying that there was no penalty because there was a receiver in the area. I understand if the penalty had been for intentional grounding, then that would apply. But since the penalty was for illegal touching, why would a receiver in the area negate the penalty? The ball still illegally touched the lineman. I think the refs blew that call. I'm not sure if it would have made a difference in the game or not, but it was a huge no call at the time and Steve Johnson was going crazy on the side-line yelling at the refs (and almost got an unsportsmanlike penalty himself - he did get a warning).

I was also surprised they picked up the flag but they said #82 Elliot was in the area so it was not an illegal touch. They made a questionable call against Augsburg tight end Brundy with a terrible spot on 4th down so I guess the calls even out. Not saying they intentionally tried to even it out but it seems as if it just happens. After the bad spot on Brundy they gave Gunnar Bloom a catch when he bobbled it going out of bounds, at least it looked that way from my seat through my Auggie colored glasses! It is very satisfying to get a chance to beat a good program like Bethel. I was looking forward to seeing Trey Anderson at this game and I am sorry to hear that he had such bad luck again this year.

It's hard to say if it was a bad spot from the spectator standpoint as it was clear across the field and there is no way we could see where he stepped out of bounds. Obviously Brundy and the rest of the bench thought it was a bad spot (Brundy ended up getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for his comments to the ref). So maybe it was a makeup call, but how in the world do you say there is no penalty just because a receiver was in the area? I think that is just blatant incompetence on the part of the refs - not knowing the rules. On the Gunnar Bloom catch, it happened right in front of where I was sitting and while Gunnar initially bobbled the ball, it looked like he gained control of it before going out of bounds. Trey was on the sidelines and it didn't look like he was limping so maybe his injury isn't that serious - hope to see him back next year. I have to admit, I won't miss seeing the Scott-Sonnenfeld combination anymore.  :)

Possibly, I don't recall that play. Whether it was run or not, my point is that Bethel's play calling was ultra conservative this year.

Not doubting you.  I just specifically remember the play.  Royals were fairly deep in their own territory, and it came towards the Johnnie bench.

Not to beat a dead horse, but another example just came to mind. Bethel only attempted 5 passes against St. Thomas the whole game. I can understand if it's a close game, which it was during the 1st half, but once Bethel started falling behind in the 2nd half, why wouldn't you try and open things up a little and try some passes? Just seemed like a strange year as far as play calling went.

There were four sacks too, so a whopping nine pass plays were called. You're absolutely right; Bethel called an incredibly conservative game against UST and didn't seem to show any interest in opening things up once they were down two or three scores.
