Ron:

The 2010 Trinity team had a BA of .376 (they had 3 players that batted over.400) and led the country in runs scored.

Ron Boerger

The Trinity bats were hot early as they chased La Verne starter Chase Pederson (formerly 5.82 ERA, 1-2 in four starts/10 appearances) with nine runs on eight hits in the one-third of the opening inning.  Jackson Teer was pulled after three innings of two hit ball and a 16-0 lead, and the Tigers went the rest of the way with rarely-used junior Zack Balbin (formerly 4.34, 0-1 in 9 appearances/1 start/18.2 IP), and the Leopards got nine runs off of him in five-plus innings before giving way to Michael Boeke (formerly 5.86, 2-2 in 11 appearances/8 starts) who recorded the final three outs, allowing only one of the two baserunners he inherited from Balbin to score.  The final score, Trinity 18, La Verne 9.  Trinity had 20 hits in 41 at-bats, mostly early, and La Verne ended up with 17 in 43.  Pederson was assessed the loss, and Boeke, despite only pitching the ninth, was awarded the win thanks to one of baseball's stupidest rules that says you have to go five innings as the starter to get a win.

ULV may have decided to keep their better starters (Urquidi, 3.20 3-3 in ten starts/17 app; Terry, 3.32 8-2 in 11 starts; DesMarets, 5.02 4-2 in 11 starts/14 app) for later.  That said, Terry hasn't pitched since May 4th, when he was pulled after 2.1 scoreless innings in the first of a DH against CMS, so I hope he isn't hurt.  With only 3 innings and 46 pitches today (and 6 K), I'd imagine Trinity could get some innings from Teer on Sunday if needed.

Ron Boerger

Went back and watched the video of Terry's last game - he pulled his right hamstring and came out immediately thereafter.  Hoping he will be able to pitch sometime this weekend but that's hard to come back from in your plant leg.  Tough break for him and the Leopards if not.

Ron Boerger

The bats that were so hot early yesterday were instead cold today as La Verne easily took two from Trinity, 15-6 and 12-3.  Niko Urquidi allowed one run in 6.1 innings to improve to 4-3 on the season in the first game; Joseph Chavana  allowed seven earned runs (on 4 hits and 7 walks) in 3.1 innings as his record sank to 7-3.  In the second game, Matthew DesMarets (4.1 innings/8 strikeouts) and Ethan Galindo (4.2, four hits, two earned runs) took a no-hitter into the eighth.  Galindo (3-0) was credited with the win while Trinity starter Jack Briese took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 2.2 innings.  ULV outhit Trinity 12-8 in the first game (along with a 12-7 advantage in free passes) and 18-4 in the second.

Trinity will have to win two tomorrow to advance, but unless they figure out how to hit like they did in the first three innings yesterday, it's hard to see how they'll do it.

Ron Boerger

In what is good news for ULV and less so for Trinity, Gerald Terry got the start for Game 4 and has held Trinity to one hit in the first three innings.  Jackson Teer, as expected, got the start for the Tigers.

Game 4: ULV 1 TU 0; walk-off; walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the 10th!

TU's Teer and ULV's Terry give up 5 hits in 15 innings!

Riley Zayas

That was a pretty outstanding pitcher's duel in San Antonio. Excellent series, which is what you hope for in those Best-of-5 series. Teer is such a reliable arm for Trinity. 1.05 ERA in 77.1 IP with 112 Ks this season. Truly believe Texas had the top two pitchers in D3 this season between Teer and Sayers Collins (ETBU). Just 17 walks for Teer as well this season.

Exciting weekend for sure for Region 10. How did LV end up hosting a super over Pomona? Bad draw for Pomona to have to go on the road to ETBU. That super has to be the matchup of the weekend. ETBU has Sayers Collins, but Pomona has proven they can hit good pitching and has some good arms of their own. It will be an exciting series to watch. I wish they were in different Supers as I think they'd both end up in Ohio for the WS.

Ron Boerger

Initial Super Regional hosts were determined during the initial draw, unfortunate that P-P ended up in the same bracket with ETBU who advanced to maintain the home field advantage.

La Verne ended up getting to host their super regional when Case Western, their predetermined super regional host, failed to advance.

Got it. Thank you for explaining that. I'm looking forward to watching the matchups this weekend. PP and ETBU will have some ridiculous pitching matchups.

The SCIAC has shown they are for real this year. CMS taking ETBU into the bottom of the 9th last weekend with a pitching staff of relievers and Pomona with the sweep this weekend. Looks like LV will lose to Lynchburg, but it was an impressive run for them.

I was hoping for 2 Region 10 teams in the Championship.

Same here. If ETBU and Pomona were in different supers they would both be in. The region is loaded and looks like it will be strong again next year.

Does anyone know if these is a site that lists the various D3 tournaments?

Ralph Turner

By tournaments, do you mean the tournaments in the regular season?
