I am actually helping out with the TV broadcast of Cortaca this year, and although I live in Cortland, and follow an E8 team, I really have no idea about either team.

Anyone with a quick scouting report of each team? Key players, Key Stats, things to watch for, etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

Curiously, what are you doing for the broadcast? Also, make sure the guys doing the broadcast know what Mark McDonough looks like. Not kidding. In 2010, they spent the entire first half identifying someone else on the IC staff as Mike Welch (I think it was Dan Elberty, who in fairness, I guess looks a little like Welch). Considering Welch had been there for 16 years, and McDonough's been the head coach for about three weeks, I wouldn't take my chances.

As for the game, the big thing for Ithaca is the status of Phil Neumann. He left the Wick game and didn't return. I think Ithaca's an underdog WITH him, let alone with Tom Dempsey (Not a slight on Dempsy, but he's a sophomore with almost no varsity experience. Throwing him into Cortaca is not going to be like Brian Grastorf playing for Dan Juvan in 2008. Also, this team isn't loaded like that one) I'd expect the IC coaches to be hush-hush, but that's key to watch.

For Ithaca, it's really a one-man show on offense. Joe Ingaro has 63 catches for 879 yards. IC's next closest receiver has 21 for 263. I know that makes it sound like I'm shortchanging the 2nd-leading rusher in the E8, but Clay Ardoin has averaged just 3.5 rushing yards per game over his last five games. The last two games, he's had 43 carries for 102 yards. There's a reason Ithaca ranks dead last in the conference in yards per game. They just don't have the playmakers. They're also the worst team in the E8 in red zone TD% (49)

On the flip side, Ithaca's defense is stout. 17.9 PPG, and 284 YPG. The Bombers will be missing Will Carter and possibly Josh Liemer, but should still be solid. IC's return game made some solid strides against Salisbury, but 18 returns in 9 games is hardly a great sample size.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Bombers. +K for that.

I am assisting with the stats and developing stories for the play by play guys. I am hoping to get a sense for what each team has so I have some idea of what to look for, other than just the stat sheet. Season storylines and individuals that are consistently high performers are great info.

Now if I can just get the same thing for Cortland...

Hi sjfcards:

Cortland brings a potent offense into Cortaca starting with a three headed monster at RB.  Dorian Myles, Sr; Justin Autera Sr (with another yr eligibility), Bronson Green. Myles leads the team in rushing, Green is a strong power back and Autera was the 2010 Player of the Year in the NJAC and tore his ACL last year.  He has had some nagging injuries this season and just now is starting to show signs of his old self.  Each is capable of a big day and breaking a long one.
Cortland has rushed for 1800 yards on the year and thrown for 1900 so they are very balanced.

They also have a triple threat at WR in Humphrey, McGinnis and Delahunty.
One of the keys will be the play of Chris Rose at QB.  He has thrown 18 TDs on the season but also 15 Picks.
Cortland is ranked 11th in the nation in scoring offense at 40 points per game.  The also have 27 take aways on the season compared to 18 turnovers.

The defense is a bend but don't break defense.  They give up about 21 points per game.  They have a good young safety in Freshman Andre Green and Sr Capt. Pete Furey at DB has had a nice season  The have 16 picks on the season and 11 fumble recoveries.  they have a nose for the ball.
Players to watch on D are Green and Furey, along with Andrew Tolosi at DB, Jesse Scanna, SO, LB Freshman Troy Beddoe, LB and Gabe Ostrow, JR, DL.

Cortland lost their opener to Buff St and shot themselves in foot with turnovers.  They have improved every week since then defensively and are always an offensive threat.  If Rose doesn't throw the ball to the Bombers I would be hardpressed to see how Ithaca comes away with this one but I would have never picked them over Salisbury and it IS Cortaca so you can throw everything on paper right out the window.  Should be a good one.  Note: Cortland's game with William Patterson last week was cancelled due to "Sandy".  So Cortland has had a week to get healthy.  They have been playing well so on one hand you don't want the break on the other they have had two weeks to prepare.  I hope they don't come out flat after the break.  Its Cortaca...I don't think they will.

finger lake

Red Dragon running attack got a lot healthier this week due to the cancelled game. Left guard, Center and Tight end will ALL be at full speed for the first time since September. Autera was also just starting to show some "Flashes" of his old self against Kean. This should be the perfect storm for Rose...Bombers had the home field against Salisbury, they won't have that luxury this week....I hope its not a blowout like last year, I would like to see a good game.

Since there seems to be little talk about the game, and almost no trash talk at all, I'm going to go in a different direction:

I continue to be disappointed that Ithaca College and Cortland State have not used the platform of the Cortaca Jug in some sort of widespread community service/charity/fundraising effort on both campus and towns. Both schools have a chance to make the game about something more than just football and drinking. It absolutely blows my mind that the two schools haven't sat down and tried to do something (If they have, I haven't seen it, but if I'm wrong, I apologize. I've seen nothing on either school's Web site)

Why not have the coaches players from both teams do some volunteer work the week of the game? (Not saying it needs to be massively-time consuming, but even an hour or so from each player could mean hundreds of hours)

Why not donate a portion of each ticket sold to a local cause? If they sell 8,500 tickets, even 50 cents a ticket would be over $4,000

Why not encourage students or community members to do volunteer/charity work throughout the year, and award winners some sort of Cortaca prize package? Tickets, limo ride to the game, chance to see the press conference, sideline pass, whatever.

There are several areas of the country where IC alums gather to watch the game (CortaCAL in LA, for example.) Why not encourage those alums to do charity work and then recognize them on the broadcast? I'm sure Cortland alums have similar viewing parties where this would work too.

Or just do what Fisher-UR did and tie the game directly to a great cause.

Would all of these work? Probably not. But do something.

Bombers, Ithaca and Cortland students are way too busy this week to be doing anything extra like charity work.

it IS Cortaca so you can throw everything on paper right out the window.

Seriously, you couldn't recycle that stuff (like all the jokes on the Cortaca board each year)?
Check out the official card game of the AU Pep Band - Str8 Eight!

...and doing the annual Cortaca coin toss is celebrity and Cortland alum Brad Ferro . Ferro, when asked why he was chosen for the pre-game tradition responded with a confused, "well I had to toss salad when incarcerated for punching Snooki so I guess I am qualified to toss a coin???"

I think that Cortland should name their stadium after this guy...

I don't think either school has capitalized on the game in any aspect (including charity).  Other than using a token quote from a 1988 SI issue (which I have never been able to find any record of in the SI vault) I think this game could be so much better.  Both schools tout their Sport Management program, you would think they could do a lot more.

Start with the ticket issue.  It is starting to really bother me.
