I don't know what game you were watching  jimmy92, Carleton was all over the Oles in the first half. Olaf converted their one good chance at the start of the second half and then were content with that slim lead. Knights had a flurry of chances at the end, including a goal line clearance and a goalmouth scramble. The second came when the Knights were throwing numbers forward at the end.

Tough to beat the same team twice back to back. I'm still confident

jimmy92

I dont recall any obvious chances for either team in the first period. For the first game all season Olaf have started at full strength, I think they gelled well. I'd be surprised if Carleton can stop then.

KnightRider23

No obvious chances?!?! You sure you weren't at the Olaf/Carleton women's game? Or the cross country meet? Cause off the top of my head I can name McGarrity hitting the top of the net from 30 yards and Passalino glancing a header just wide as two great chances that the Knights had in the first half. Look at the box score if you don't believe me. But to say there were no obvious chances is extremely idiotic. Or some intense Fox News bias. At this point I don't know what's worse.

Sorry, sounds like a miscommunication. By obvious chances I meant clear-cut scoring opportunities where you would expect the player to score. Perhaps the header, but the long range shot I was certain the keeper had covered regardless. It seemed that Carleton controlled the flow of the first-half, but as I meant - I don't think that they particularly opened up the Olaf defense at will. Neither did Olaf of course, but they did enough to create a couple of clear cut scoring opportunities, which they converted.

I belief that the Oles have too many attacking options for Carleton to shut down this week. Could I be wrong? Of course, but as I said, I'd be surprised. I also don't recall Carleton managing a win at St. Olaf since 2007? It's becoming somewhat of a hoodoo....

KnightRider23

I'd expect most of the players at this level to score when the ball is inside the 6 yard box and unmarked. Carleton had two or three of those types of chances alone in the first half, let alone the other four or five chances where they either got behind their backline or were given space to shoot from around 20 yards or so. Plus the set pieces in the second half, one that the keeper made a miraculous save and the other that hit the crossbar. Olaf had three good chances and were able to score on two. Simple as that...

Pretty strange finish to the MIAC season in my opinion.  GAC went unbeaten and untied.  St. John'ss came out of nowhere grabbing points vs. CarlEton, St. Thomas, and Augsburg to earn the 4th seed in the conference playoffs.  Looking at SJU's non-conference results they would've been better off if their team bus ran out of gas on the way to the game.  CarlEton and St. Olaf had fine seasons and the winner of Wednesdays MIAC playoff game will likely be ending the season for their cross town rival.  I don't anticipate there being three MIAC teams in the NCAA tournament this year but anything is possible.  None of the regions around the nation look head and shoulders above the rest, several blemishes for almost every team makes this years field pretty wide open in my opinion.

MIAC semi-finals Predictions:

GAC 2 SJU 0
St. Olaf 1 CarlEton 1 (St. Olaf 4-2 in pk's)

repete

You might well be right about SJU. But in fairness to the Johnnies, they played those NC games without Scudder, a MIAC first team pick last year and one of the league's better scorers.  With only four games under his belt, it's hard to see how he's fitting in.

Durantula

Is it for sure that MIAC will even get two teams in the ncaa?

GarbageGoals33

It isn't a guarantee that the MIAC gets two teams into the tournament but I would say that there is a very strong chance.

Carlton had couple decent chances towards the end of 1st half  but it was all olaf second half. Carleton had  stupid midfield to start the game and finish the game. I  had to go take a leak at half time and was walking by the Oles huddle and heard the coach say they got no midfield so blah, blah, blah. Players who can't control or read the game played 2 center mids. it was so funny watching 4 left feet trying to string a pass or two. CM for olaf was toying with them. He was very very good. Very nice pass to lund for 1 st goal. If youre playing outside back, can't ball watch and let someone sneak behind you like that. Pretty good skills for Miac team I say. If carleton uses the same line up I say St oles 3 - Carleton 0. What the hell are they thinking on the other side of the canon river.

Last Time GAC had an undefeated season was 1970. Not sure if there were any others around the MIAC since then...

If your're talking about undefeated and untied MIAC regular season, it appears there's three others:

1986 St. John's 9-0-0
1990 Macalester 10-0-0
2001 Macalester 10-0-0

If you open it to any undefeated MIAC regular season, GAC went 8-0-2 in 1972 and 7-0-2 in 1983.  Other to go undefeated:

1972 Gustavus Adolphus 8-0-2
1979 St. John's 9-0-3
1980 Augsburg 7-0-3
1982 St. John's 10-0-2
1983 Gustavus Adolphus 7-0-2
1985 St. Thomas 8-0-1
1988 Macalester 7-0-3
1989 St. John's 8-0-2
1991 St. Thomas 9-0-1
1997 Macalester 9-0-1
1999 Macalester 9-0-1
2002 Macalester 9-0-1
2003 Macalester 8-0-2

It's going to be a good game regardless of the opinion of the Carleton midfield. Last time Carleton played away at Olaf in the playoffs (after losing in the regular season as well), the game went to 2OT and Olaf broke through with 30 seconds left.

I'd be scared of McGarrity, although Olaf will probably double/triple team him again.

The game will go into OT and Carleton is going to get a break this year - its their time to get one at Olaf.

jimmy92

With his experience, the only player I'd be worried about in this game is David Rosenthal.

GarbageGoals33

Rosenthal's best season was his freshmen year.  Unfortunately he has been plagued with injuries and hasn't lived up to the lofty expectations he earned after having such a great first year.  His experience is a non-factor at this point.  The CarlEton vs. St. Olaf game today will be a very good one.  Hopefully the field doesn't have too much of a negative impact on the quality of soccer played.

[Rumor] from inside source: Olaf's field is currently not playable. Supposedly they messed up when they were shoveling off the snow so the

CArLetON Olaf game is postponed.
