I really hope that wasn't the live call, that would be an incredible shame and a waste of a great broadcasting moment opportunity.

Mr. Ypsi

Thanks for sharing that - +k!

My older son had a goal (during play, not a free kick) that was roughly proportional; about 35 yards (smaller field) that went upper right of the goal - he was 10!  (My first goal ever in a coed rec league was not dissimilar - 30 yards (small field, small goals, 5 on 5) to the top left corner of the goal.  Fool that I am, I admitted it was intended as a pass to a guy coming up the left side! ::)  Fortunately, I scored a real goal about five minutes later! ;D)

Yes, that was the live call.  Missed a big opportunity... it was important that he had to finish his sentence about the game tying goal and assist...

On the other hand, this happened the same day in the NAIA.  Warning... turn your phone/laptop volume down.

Ugh.  That's why you should never make assumptions about the game.  Sure a 75 yard free kick seems harmless... if you have no situational awareness.  It's OT, there is limited time separating your side from a PK shootout, and legs are tied.  Of course the ball is going to get pumped down into the box, and you need to be on your toes as a broadcaster.  It's as if he wasn't even watching what was happening and reading from a card or notes sheet or something.  Even if you're discussing something off visual topic you should still be capable of jumping back to live action at a moment's notice at all times.

Well hopefully he lost the right to ever commentate at a future final 4. It really is too bad that his call of probably one of the most ridiculous finishes to any Final 4 game in recent memory, maybe ever, was the worst call I've heard from broadcaster in awhile.

I know it's cool to have play-by-play commentators but it's too bad that at the Final 4 they had that. Small things like that also illustrate the gaps between Division I, II, and III. I'm not making a case for DIII to be on ESPN like Division I but they get commentators who call MLS games (albeit Twellman) and to put it politely, we don't.

Side Note: It's becoming comical each year watching the DI college cup to hear Taylor Twellman's rant about how unfair it is to have these teams play just 48 hours after they played a semi-final....come to Division III Taylor, where we've never heard of an extra day to rest in between NCAA tournament games. As well as the D1 also spreading every round up so they have 2 games a week that have about 4 days in between them to rest up. I'd love to see the backlash Division I would have if they had back to backs every weekend like their little DIII brother.

Well said, Midwest!   I was cracking up listening to Twellman say they should play Thursday and Sunday.   C'mon mannnn!    The whole tournmane set-up is a joke in DIII, and is way to focused on geography and saving money any way possible.

When we (Stevens) made the Final 4 in 2008, you have no idea how frustrating it was for me to find out that the NCAA sends some boring shills to do the broadcast.  I would have gladly done it.  I'd still do it now.  NCAA sign me up, I've even kept a demo tape of the good old days!

And good god don't get me started on Twellman.  Let's just say the days of the MLS having credible announcers are sadly gone.  I had hope for the Arlo White generation, and then they moved him to EPL coverage.

I hear you loud and clear. When you get to the final 4 you're sort of expecting the red carpet treatment and it's a big let down when little things like that aren't taken care of the right way. For as many dedicated alums and families that may be at the final 4, theres 4-5x  more watching online from all over the country/world having to deal with it.

Welcome to Division III
