1)  UW-Whitewater (8)     88      ( 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2)
2)  St. John's (1)        83      ( 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2)

Very minor - but I think that should be UWW (7) and SJU (2) - like the post above it - right?

...it does get a little interesting after #3.

Got it, Thanks

While this week's votes are tallied, thought I'd offer up the top games in the West this weekend.  Consider this to be the mother lode weekend of the season.  No fewer than 6 games worth watching, across the region.

Here's what's on tap:

We'll start in the IIAC ARC, where Central hosts Dubuque.  This game is intriguing for two reasons 1) Central and Wartburg appear to be the two big dogs in the ARC.  Dubuque will be their only common opponents so far, so we'll have some info to compare.  Wartburg beat Dubuque 42-25 two weekends ago, but they were down 17-0 early.  And 2) here's a chance for Central to gain some views and notice both in the region and on a national level.  Central is definitely viewed as being behind Wartburg, but would a big win over a (decent) common opponent have others take notice?

Out West, a big SCIAC tilt on tap as Redlands visits Chapman.  Redlands beat Linfield on 9/21, and Chapman did the same to Whitworth.  This is likely the SCIAC game of the year and the winner takes big control of the conference.  Nationally, Redlands checks in at #15, while Chapman is just outside the top 25.  Both teams have been pretty dominant so far.  This will be a heck of a game to watch.  Note this one kicks off at 9pm Central, so after you're done shoveling snow in the upper Midwest Saturday, throw a log on the fire and enjoy this one.

Next, we tour the WIAC and three huge games.  First, Stevens Point heads to Oskhosh.  UWSP is 2-1 vs. D3, while Oshkosh is 3-1 but 3 of their 4 games have been decided by 5 points or less.  The WIAC is always tough and while this might not be the sexiest match up, it's a big game for both teams.

Next, Stout heads to LaCrosse.  LaCrosse is licking their wounds after getting beat by Platteville, and Stout is just 1-4, but against a brutal schedule.  If LaCrosse is who we think they are, they should take care of business here.  If not, it's another game that will throw the WIAC into chaos behind Whitewater.

Speaking of, the marque WIAC game is undefeated Platteville at undefeated Whitewater.  Top two teams in the conference at this point, and #19 and #3, respectively, nationally.  Winner here takes control of the WIAC, while the loser falls into the clutches of the rest of the WIAC pack.  Still a ton of football to go, but not too early to be thinking about who the leaders in pool C will be.  This game will be worth watching for those reasons as well.

And then finally, the huge game nationally is #6 Bethel at #4 St Johns.  Weather will be a factor here, as it looks to be (suddenly) cold and windy, with rain/snow.  Defense and the better running game will likely have an advantage.  Probably not going to expect much from either kicking games.  Can't wait to see this one, good luck to both teams.  This has pool C implications all over it as well.

You made me want to watch DIII football all day long.
Thanks

The unmentioned WIAC game, UWRF at UWEC, has big pool C influence too. An 8-2 St Thomas team would be a lot more attractive if UWEC powers through the rest of its schedule. If the Blugolds end up, say, 4-6, the Tommies resume suffers considerably.

For that matter, say the Blugolds win out, 8-2, with losses to St Norbert and Whitewater, win over St Thomas. ??? Lots of football to be played, of course, but the WIAC will produce, at best, two or fewer teams with one loss or better, and my money says there will be only one of those. 8-2 gonna stand a chance this year, IMO

St. Norbert's only win (so far) was against the Blugolds, so that's not exactly looking like a quality loss for UWEC. But like you said, lots of football to be played still.

Two notes:  Everyone is locked in on Bethel for the second week in a row, and the Tommies were the lowest team to get votes from all 9 voters. Looks like we have three tiers, top three teams , middle four teams, and the bottom three teams.

Simpson, Wartburg, and Central will do some sorting out of the ARC standings soon as well. Starting with Simpson v. Wartburg next weekend.

Redlands v. Chapman will give us some clarity in the SCIAC as well.

Also interesting how far out of favor LaCrosse fell with their loss to Platteville.  Last week they were 6th.  Got beat by (then) #10 Platteville, and dropped all the way to 13th.  When UST, Whitworth and Linfield lost their games, they dropped about 4-5 spots each.

I suspect it's due to more data points and info at this point in the season vs. those other relatively early season losses.  UST clobbering the Cobbers probably didn't help LaCrosse either.

I'm the loaner as far as Wartburg goes. They are in my top 25, but unfortunately I have 10 west teams in front of them.

wm4

I had Wartburg at #10 back in like week 2.  I know they ARC is not the toughest conference, but they keep winning convincingly and I'm impressed.  I have them at #3.

#'s 1 and 2 are obvious, then it's really tightly packed, 3-5.

Johnnie Tommie will provide some clarity this week and should be a heck of a game.

Whitewater travels to Stevens Point, which could be interesting.

Oshkosh host Eau Claire, which is worth watching as well.
