Also,

Looking forward to 2016 Rule changes piece. Hopefully, that comes out before Thursday. Any major changes that we all should be aware of

If the NCAA is following USSF and NFHS then the offside rule will be updated. Not sure if they will change their DOGSO and fouls off the field like USSF

5.7 Video Review
Video review is permissible (not required) in three specific situations. The use of video review
must be agreed upon by both head coaches before the start of the game. During the game, video
review can be initiated by the referee only. In order to use video review, the review equipment
must be provided by the home institution and available at the scorekeeper's table or field level.
Indisputable video evidence, in the judgment of the referee, must be present for the call on the
field to be overturned. The three situations in which video review is permissible are:
1. Determine whether a goal has been scored;
2. Identify players for disciplinary matters; and
3. Determine whether a fight occurred and identify all participants.

This is unreal...Is this really going to happen in D3?  I can see looking at video review after the game for disciplinary matters which I have seen before in determining suspending players for fights but to do an in-game review for disciplinary actions and goals scored I think is a little much at the D3 level or even D1. I would be all for it but I do not see it happening, maybe i am wrong on this but I do not see it

Didn't make the Thursday deadline, but Part 2 on the Rules Changes has now finally been finished and posted.

What's new in 2016? - Part 2: Rules Changes

You guys on here already mentioned and somewhat discussed the video review and offside.  Overall, there's no really big or impactful changes this time around.  Most seem sensible, worthwhile changes.

Nice work Ommadawn....I have some time so I am going to watch some of the Nescac guys and post what I notice and see if you guys agree with me...

Amherst---Nico Kenary---This is kid will fit right in at Amherst..Half his highlight video is as a defender that whacks everything in sight from the back. Looks to have wheels and is a really tough kid. Hard to knock off the ball and not afraid to mix it up. Gets stuck in. Very LEFT footed. I do not think I saw him use his right foot much at all. Will fit in at Amherst right away. Over / Under on Yellow's in 2018 if he gets on the field. (4)

Bowdoin---Dylan Reid---Not much to go off of but looks to be a big athletic CB..Hard to tell how technical he is but certainly this kid is a big time athlete

Tufts----Will Raphael--- Not much to go off of but what he does have for highlights is pretty impressive...This kid looks have serious hops and a nose for the goal. Some of his goals off of set pieces are pretty damn good. Looks to be a scraper and will fit in nicely at Tufts. I would imagine he will see some playing time next year but again it is not much to go off of. Looks to be pacey but hard to tell his skill. Maybe a midfielder? Some more video of this kid would be appreciated. Looks like a gamer though

Tufts---Zachary Seigelstein----Looks to be a technical player that threads the needle nicely. I think the physicality of Nescac will be eye opening for this kid as he needs to get more meat on his bones. I doubt he will see the field much next year as Tufts already has plenty of guys like him like Van Brewer and Trevorrow but I am sure by his JR and SR years he will be a big contributor and will be one of these guys that we see really improve under Shapiro's tutelage.

WOW...I must say I am very impressed...Gotta love Jersey kids...What that kid lacks in size he makes up for in heart..That kid is fearless and has serious sack coming out of his net..Very refreshing.....He has a compact solid build and looks to be quick as a cat...He will struggle with balls in the air in Nescac and not sure if he has the best hands but Hamilton GK Linds Cadwell will be put on notice immediately with this kid coming in. Very good get for Nizzi now he needs to shore up that backline..

That team is loaded with technical sophomore midfielders, many of whom didn't see the field much from what I saw.  15 is Terrence Chun. Expect a lot from him the next two years.

Falconer

Update on Messiah recruiting: Luke Groothoff has been named HS All-American. https://www.pressherald.com/2017/12/17/boys-soccer-luke-groothoff-yarmouth/

To the best of my knowledge, two previous Messiah players had this distinction, Kai Kasiguran and Jack Thompson. If there have been others, I don't know who they are. Both previous AAs graduated from the same HS, Cayahoga Valley (OH) Christian HS. They are one of the very best soccer schools in the nation, and they have another AA this year, Colin Gaines, who will play at NAIA Mount Vernon (OH) Nazarene University. They used to be coached by a MC alum, Jason Spodnik, who is now the school's president.

Groothoff joins his brother Jonathan as a Falcon. With the Falcons losing four SR starters plus (almost certainly) redshirt JR Danny Brandt (who might actually have graduated this past month, but I have no specific information whether he made that choice), I'd be very surprised if Luke Groothoff doesn't start coming out of the gate next fall. However the question would be, where? Probably Brandt's position in MF, given his particular skill set. However, since he has excellent speed, perhaps he'll take Colby Thomas' spot on the right wing. He wasn't a big scorer in HS, but he did score several goals in the Maine state tournament, against the best competition, even though a teammate was among the leading goal scorers in the state--partly owing to Groothoff's passing and unselfishness. It will be interesting to see what transpires.

Falconer

On a different note that seems appropriate for this thread, as out-of-season banter, the Wall Street Journal named Messiah as the number two school in the Northeast for student engagement. That happened earlier this month: https://www.messiah.edu/news/article/249/messiah_ranked_2_in_northeast_for_student_engagement_by_wall_street_journal

If you read the full story at WSJ (if you can, given that they put up the firewall if you go there often), you'll see the full top ten in the Northeast and it's quite an interesting list. For the benefit of those who can't read it, here's the list:

Brown #6 nationally
Messiah and Cornell U #17 nationally
Northeastern #24
CMU, Dartmouth, Swarthmore, Cedar Crest College (PA), and Penn all tied for #33
Ithaca College (NY) #52

Note that just one of these schools, Northeastern, awards $ for sports. I love that! Although four others compete in D1, they are all Ivies. Messiah and three others are D3. Many of these schools are nationally competitive in soccer. This seems to confirm what a lot of us know, that many excellent HS soccer players turn down $ to play elsewhere (Ivies or D3), b/c they can still play at a pretty high level while picking a school b/c that's where they want to get an education.

Awfully encouraging information for all of us, I would say. And, in the specific case of Messiah, it provides a partial answer to those who might wonder why students in general (not athletes) might pick a school like that over many fine alternatives. They are obviously awfully good at paying attention to individual students--or, at least this is what lots of their students have said, in response to the WSJ poll, which is based on student perceptions. Their resources obviously can't compare with those at the Ivies, CMU, or Swarthmore (which has one of the highest endowments per student in the nation-- see https://www.collegeraptor.com/college-rankings/details/EndowmentPerStudent ), so they must have faculty who are off the charts at teaching, advising, and networking to be this high on the WSJ list.

Falconer

What I just said about student perceptions of engagement at Messiah is confirmed more specifically for soccer by the very large number of brother combinations who have played there, whether or not at the same time. I think it was Ryan Harmanis who called attention to that phenomenon at OWU, Messiah, and a few other schools. I doubt I could list all such combos at Messiah, since there have been so many of them. The largest number I can think of is the four Thompson brothers, followed by three Robbins boys. You can't get that type of thing without really high satisfaction with the whole student experience--as indicated by the WSJ poll.

There could potentially be a third Bender down the road, following Jacob (POY in 2016) and Josh: http://balt.ussoccerda.com/sam/teams/index.php?team=3937460&player=324978397. However, it's way too early to assume anything about his soccer future. I hear he might be the best player in the family, which is saying a lot. Time will tell.

luckylefty

Not sure what thread to put this in, but there are currently two head coaching jobs up for grabs. Centenary has let their HC go. Not sure what the deal was as they have had some moderate success.
