What the F!! Come on JHU announcer. Capt. Obvious. Go ahead goal by UMW. Announcer said something like - That will be something he would like to have back and it will haunt him in his dreams?? Then naming him as a grad transfer?? I'm paraphrasing. Could also been because the constant, though not hard, rain?? Just stupid.

How about saying how many sitters strikers miss game after game??

Hopkins Walk-On

The second goals for both teams were the result of keeper misplays. I couldn't tell from the stream how hard it was raining and the announcer didn't mention it (at least not that I heard). It's been misting/spitting all day in DC so I could understand why the ball was wet and difficult to handle. Tightly contested game. In my highly partisan opinion, the 2-2 final score was a fair result.

JH 2nd goal was obvious handling
Ref didn't have a good game all around
That being said UMW played poorly and got punished for not putting more of the 25 shots in the back of the net

Here is a link to a replay of the JHU goal that the keeper couldn't handle

Looks pretty wet to me, but the mistake I would be more upset about if I was the coach was the two (really three) UMW defenders on the ball and none on the winger who was wide open for the pass that led to an easy cross for the JHU goal.

It had stopped raining at that point but I'm sure the ball was wet. Agree that the defenders played that really poorly on the wing - lack of communication about who was pressing the ball and who was dropping on the winger.

2-2 a fair result? Please. Mary Washington was dominant and unlucky. See the box score. I don't rate Hopkins like others and watched them live against Muhlenberg, who had the better of chances in that match and the Mules are still figuring things out. For 20 minutesat end of 1H they peppered JHU in the best stretch I've seen for a Mules team in the past four year against JHU (and that includes two CC title matches). I just don't understand the love for F&M and Hop on this board. Way over the top. UMW was 2-3 goals better last night. They are REALLY good.

I should couch that statement that I don't rate Hopkins. I don't rate them as highly as others. They are all very good on the ball, but their back line is nowhere near as good as years past and susceptible to turnovers when pressed unlike years past when they would slice up opponents who pressed. They have very technical players but simply don't often get dangerous. It's a fascinating system of play however.

SKUD

REALLY good teams don't draw 2-2 with Hopkins, they win by your imaginary score.

Hopkins92

(For what it's worth, I agree -- and have said so -- that this year's backline is not like the usual Hopkins backline. They might gel and tighten up, but in this system, you really can't afford mistakes back there.)

that game was one dropped ball from being a Hopkins win.

A terrible pk call and blatant handball would suggest otherwise. Hopkins was outplayed on the night. Will both teams be tournament teams absolutely, but go and watch the game back if they post it on demand and Hopkins had large periods where they couldn't get out of their end even when trying to play super direct.

In general (and obviously speaking from a certain viewpoint) it seems like there have been numerous results already this season which based on 2023 and previous seasons, are surprising.  However, the rhythm of the recruiting cycle does mean that there will be times where a disproportionate number of players in a team are suddenly required to make bigger contributions and are probably under more scrutiny than ever before.  Plus, programs have been able to attract players they might have previously missed out on due to performance.  But the one thing above all is that it's not even October yet and integration takes time and coaches everywhere are probably still being surprised by who has stepped up and who maybe are yet to.

I watched and my point is a really great team would have separated themselves from Hopkins and the refs.

Excellent points Enmore.

Fair enough.

Also, what may not be as impactful and not an excuse  - UMW played 3 games (Rowan, Col. Coll back to back) in 6 days. Won 2 of them against ranked teams and was in position to win a third, but for the tying goal which was interesting.

Like any team on a rainy Wed evening (only thing missing was the cold), UMW had a let down to a certain extent. While JHU had chances, UMW was tough and IMO more dynamic and got unlucky but lucky as did JHU to tie.

On to Messiah.
