In a non-conference regional match-up, Eastern "upset" F&M 1-0 last night.  Up until the goal in the 64th minute, shots were even, 10-10 (SOG 2-2). F&M would take more shots afterwards seeking the equalizer, but none were on frame.  Big win for Eastern. Will help their Pool C resume is needed.

Though a generation apart, both coaching staffs contained multiple former Messiah players, including both head coaches.

F&M:
Dan Wagner - head coach (Messiah 1991-1995)
Jeremy Kirchner - asst. coach (Messiah 1994-1997)

Eastern:
Jeremy Payne - head coach (Messiah 2011-2014)
Benji Kennel - asst. coach (Messiah 2012-2015)
Kirby Robbins - asst. coach (Messiah 2014-2017)

It was the first game between the two schools since 2002, Dan Wagner's first at F&M.  He and his brother Mark Wagner, the former Eastern head coach, never scheduled each other.  With Mark leaving Eastern two years ago, it's nice to see this match-up.

When will we see a Messiah vs F&M match-up?

I don't think Messiah ever schedules F&M during the regular season, so you're not gonna get the luxury of that until the NCAA Tournament.

Last meeting I can remember was in 2013 where Messiah won, convincingly.   No surprise as that 2013 was one of the best I have ever watched at the d3 level... better than 2014 Falcons, 2004 Falcons.

2013 had two NSCAA POYs in Jeremy Payne and Joshua Wood,  AAs Brian Ramirez, Carter Robbins, and future AA in Jacob Bender and Danny Rowe (who both came off the bench all year) with Jack Thompson terrorizing the flank, Kovach, Danny Brandt

What team on your top ten has played 4 teams in your top ten?  None, BUT the Fords have and have a 3-1 record (the loss to F&M was in OT).
Maybe time to show some respect for Haverford?  What do YOU think?

I think the Fords had a strong game today by beating Drew 3-2.  And the USC coach's poll last week reflects that as the Fords move up to ninth in the region's ranked teams which will likely continue with today's win, moving them to 6-4.   It will be interesting to see how the region develops in the final weeks.

USC Poll Oct 9th

1   Messiah College  (10-0-2)
2   Lycoming College (10-1-1)
3   Franklin & Marshall College (9-1-2)
4   Johns Hopkins University (8-3-1)
5   Eastern University (8-2-1)
6   Dickinson College (7-3-2)
7   Gettysburg College (6-3-1)
8   Drew University (8-3-0)
9   Haverford College (5-4-0)
10   Lebanon Valley College (6-3-1)

Records shown are through games of Oct. 7, 2018

Actually two teams in your top ten have played other teams in your top ten....both Centennial Conference teams (maybe there should be a discussion sometime about how good of a conference it is):  F&M with a 3-1 record and Hopkins with a 1-2-1 record.

With that said, Haverford should be ranked in the region.

Massey Ratings:
  4 Messiah  SOS 23
11 F&M   SOS 14 (3 blemishes, big match at JHU on Saturday 10/13), winner will be in the #2 slot
18 JHU   SOS 13 (4 blemishes, draw vs Messiah helps their cause, losses to Gettysburg, Haverford, MW doesn't hurt as much)
24 Eastern SOS 49
25 Lycoming SOS 126
38 Haverford SOS 7 (4 blemishes but have played the top end of the Centennial) Potential to finish 4th in region by end of season...
45 Gettysburg SOS 19 (4 blemishes:  Lost at Haverford, at TCNJ, vs Cortland St)
50 Dickinson SOS 36  (5 blemishes: Lost at Lynchburg, vs Messiah, vs F&M)  Dickinson should beat Gburg on Sat 10/13 and move up.
86 LVC SOS 42
90 Swat SOS 39
94 Drew SOS 124

Can't say I disagree with this model... I would think this is very close to how NCAA Regional Rankings will shape up for the first release.  Lycoming does not have a strong schedule and not many games vs RR opponents.

I know I could go internet digging and get the answer, but isn't that a brand new coach at Haverford?

:goes and checks:

Right, so, brand new coach... Look, I'm disinclined to defend the Fords, but turnover at the coaching position can be really disruptive.

As mentioned above, it's going to be interesting to see how the Centennial plays out.

Haverford had an off year last year.  lots of reasons why, but they still had lots of talent.  After early adjustment to new coach (and some bad weather and field issues), they seem to be rebounding back into form.  Centennial Conference play-offs should be interesting!

+K lastguy for your post - appreciate the ratings info from Massey.  Sorry, but I don't know how to increase your D3 karma officially.

I am neutral on the Fords but this is the third or fourth time I have heard about these field conditions for Haverford. I hate to break it to you but the committee doesn't care about your field conditions. Last time I checked the other team they faced played the in the same conditions on the same field. Haverford also has 4 losses and at the time of your argument to have them in the top 10 was 4-4...a measly .500 win percentage. That doesn't cut it no matter how difficult the schedule is. So a team that's 1-9 but played the toughest schedule in the country should be regionally ranked? Makes no sense. If you don't get results it doesn't matter. They are however starting to turn the corner and I think they will be in the top 10 in the first rankings but I hope you realize how the rankings work. I am fairly neutral on this region and enjoy watching and discussing all the teams but don't be too much of a homer if you can't back it up and have to resort to poor field conditions as an excuse.

On a side note, when is the first set of regional rankings released? Has anything changed with the criteria from the NCAA?
