Don't sleep on the Mules MAF...a bit banged up coming out of preseason, but pretty much everyone back with a few strong recruits and a returning redshirt CB...very deep.

Plus they will not be playing on a meadow this year!  https://muhlenbergsports.com/news/2023/8/8/soccer-and-womens-lacrosse-to-play-on-resurfaced-varsity-field.aspx

Haverford comes back from 3-1 down in the second half to earn a tie 3-3.  Had a bunch of chances to come out with a win.  A few of the freshman will be helpful this year.

Johns Hopkins ties NC Wesleyan 1-1 after NC Wesleyan evened the score in the 84th minute

Dickinson beat Southern Virginia 2-0 in a game they pretty much dominated

Washington College and Moravian tie 0-0

Messiah beats The College of New Jersey 4-0 in a game that was apparently very tight for more than an hour.  All the goals came from the 59th minute on.

Rosemont beats Swarthmore 1-0

Stevens and Manhattanville 0-0. Keeper saved a really bad Stevens PK in the 2nd half.

From what I saw, Stevens had problems finishing.

Messiah 4 - 0 Catholic.

Catholic hung in there for the first half though Messiah came very close to scoring at least twice.

Catholic's press was mildly effective for the first 20 minutes but the heat of the day and Messiah's ball movement & possession wouldn't allow Catholic to continue to do it well.

Messiah repeatedly created chances down Catholic's left side without being able to create the final product. Constant danger there though.

Messiah's MacDonald scored with his head off a ball worked along the end line and crossed in the first minute of the second half.
Catholic then struggled to regain its composure while Messiah managed to scored three more goals and hit woodwork a couple times.

Catholic never really threatened to score in the second half. Two very different halves of soccer.

I was at the game, beautiful day and facility.

Mary Washington v. JHU - Rocket free kick by MW in the upper 90 above the wall with about a min. left in 1st half.  Crazy great free kick. 1-0 at the half.

SierraFD3soccer

Brutal day for JHU. Down 4-0 with about 22 min left in second half. Gave up a tough goal during the run of play and then a clear PK in the box. 4th was also during the run of play. 5th almost scored but went off the post. JHU clearly frustrated now. Would not want to be on that bus back to Baltimore.

Just did a little searching and I think they lost a game 3-2 to Haverford and I can't find a time in the recent past that they lost 3-0 much less 4-0. 2-0 yes in 2021, but not to this extreme.

Early in the season obviously and on a hot day after playing to a 1-1 tie on Friday.  JHU definitely with its 6 grad students and experienced squad coming back this season can dig this out.

One thing that is clearly obvious is that this year is clearly not last year.  JHU 0-1-1, Stevens 0-1-1, W&L 0-1-1, but still very recoverable. W&L lost to Messiah in the first game last year and made it to the quarterfinals. F&M lost to Stevens 3-0 in its second game and did not lose again till their conference playoffs.  Time for some coaches to earn they're pay.

Hopkins Walk-On

I was at the JHU-MWU game. It was a close first half. MWU was awarded a free kick about 22 yards out in front of the goal on a soft foul and the MWU player hit a fantastic kick. Right over what appeared to be a well-positioned wall.

In the second half, JHU just fell apart. Without Tim Treinen, their All-American center back who held things down for four years, they looked a bit lost in the middle. The grad transfers are very skilled but it didn't look like anyone really knew what their teammates were doing. Once it got to 4-0, Hopkins emptied the bench and played a bunch of freshmen. We will see how things go but Hopkins has a lot of work to do.

Early days, long season. Big challenge for Appleby. He may be having some of the challenges many D1 coaches have.  Several new experienced players coming into the team which is much different than having a core of upperclassmen bringing in freshman. Could be not a stable until they figure it out.  Just rough with the guys who started as freshmen. FYI, last three years JHU's keepers were grad students (first one lost his senior season to Covid though).  Can't imagine how tough that would be on a goalkeeper kid who was a freshman two or three years ago.  My son had two years of this where the team changed substantially each year and did not help in cohesiveness even when individual players had a lot of talent.
