Another Mom

Washington and Lee v Shenandoah game has been rescheduled to tomorrow due to the campus having a shelter in place order, that I believe is still in effect. Thankfully there was no violence but "out of an abundance of caution" they are going building to building. I hear VMI, next door, is also locked down.

Yup, should be interesting as to what actually happened.  Always good to be safe.

Washington and Lee move on to the ODAC finals, winning 4-2 over Shenandoah.  Shenandoah had 6 yellow cards, to W&L's one.

Hopkins and Muhlenberg advance. Incredible.

I watched the Hop game on "wife cam" which as return viewers will know is with a main show on the big TV and the game shoved off to the side. With that said, this really looked like a dominating Jays performance. The Jays scored on an absolute golazo from D1 grad transfer Ben Goodman and then crazy 50+ yard golazo from Jonathan Cui 20 minutes later. The JHU keeper stoppped a PK with about 20 mins left that effectively took the air out of the game.

I only saw the goal from the Muhles to go up 2-1 off of a corner, but credit to them having watched them in person... They WORK. They communicate. Very difficult to break down. Sunday will be fun.

Hopkins Walk-On

Not sure why, but Hopkins seems to play its best soccer vs. Washington College. Perhaps because the teams play a somewhat similar style? They both like to possess the ball. Washington College did not press in this game, like they did in the first half of the regular season game between the two. I have no explanation for the change in approach, except to say WC looked tired in the 2nd half of the first game. Maybe they were trying to play conservatively and save their energy.

Either way, it was a closer game than the final score would indicated. WC had very few real chances other than the PK miss and a scrum after a corner kick that ended with a shot off the post and a goal-line save by the Hopkins keeper. Then again, Hopkins chances were limited too. Two audacious and well-executed long-range shots but not much else. Finals v. Muhlenberg will be a good game.

With that said, this really looked like a dominating Jays performance. The Jays scored on an absolute golazo from D1 grad transfer Ben McDonald and then crazy 50+ yard golazo from Jonathan Cui 20 minutes later. The JHU keeper stoppped a PK with about 20 mins left that effectively took the air out of the game.

I watched the WAC Hopkins game on my own "wife cam" which I suppose in my home lately has been flash it on the family room TV while we watch together and then I try to concentrate as off topic questions are thrown like grenades.  It's not her fault. I happen to have a Y chromosome which means I am completely unable to multitask.

Back to the point and with due respect I will disagree on some aspects.  Despite the score line I didn't see a dominating performance, particularly in the first half especially when it seemed the ToP was balanced.  And more of a nit but the second goal was definitely well inside the offensive half so not 50+ but a heads up cheeky goal nonetheless.  I agree both goals were fantastic and Hopkins deserved the win no doubt.

FWIW what intrigued me about the game tonight was WAC's strategy.  In the previous match up a couple of weeks ago WAC pressed hard which seemed to cause confusion to a certain degree of success again despite the score line.  I expected the same tonight so was surprised when the plan was the complete opposite--very little pressing at all.  If I had to guess WAC wanted to be unpredictable.  In any case hats off to Hopkins for adapting and winning both times.

Regardless of their finish this year I do think WAC has upside in the coming years based on the quality of their underclassmen.  And unlike other programs it seems they are hardly impacted if at all by the expiration of 5th year of eligibility.

You beat me to it, story of my life.  I agree with this, only thing I'd add is my guess was the strategy was to come out with a completely different look from the previous game.  Same result though 2-0.

Yeah, I guess I said dominating because every time I glanced over Hop had the ball, trying to move it down the left flank (at least in the first half.) But, yeah, the stats have WC with a pretty big edge on shots and corners, so I'm certainly not going to argue the point. And I might've mis-spotted the 2nd goal, but if not 50, it was absolutely from 40. That was not a normal, run-of-the-mill goal.

I would add that that the WC keeper plays like a sweeper, which I love. But he was on his 18 when the ball got turned over and he just turned off his brain for a few seconds and didn't retreat once Cui got over the midfield stripe. Cui caught him out... savvy goal.

HALF:  Cabrini 1 - Marywood 0

Pretty quiet Atlantic East Conference semi-final game offensively, but Cabrini takes the lead in the 34th minute on a penalty kick in an effort to extend their season, and the life of the Cabrini soccer program, at least one more game (the women lost in Pks in the first round of the conference tournament on Saturday).

This also could be the last home game of the Cabrini soccer program's existence.  Home has been good to them.  This year, Cabrini has been 5-2-2 at home and 1-5-1 away (and 0-1 at a neutral site).

FINAL:  Cabrini 2 - Marywood 1

Cabrini extended it's lead to 2-0 on a Marywood own goal in the 78th minute and then held on as
Marywood got a goal in the 88th to make it 2-1, but ran out of time for the rally.

The season, the program, and for some, their soccer careers, extended one more game.

UPDATE:  Neumann beats Marymount VA in 2OT 2-1 and Cabrini plays @ Neumann on Saturday in the AEC finals

Atlantic East Conference Championship Game in a few hours:

Cabrini @ Neumann at 1 PM eastern

Could be Cabrini's last soccer game ever or could be (one of?) the greatest victories in the last season of the program's existence.  Even while Cabrini is preparing for this game, Villanova has been effectively dancing on its grave as it finalized the acquisition of its campus  on Thursday (https://www.inquirer.com/education/villanova-university-cabrini-purchase-details-20231102.html?cid=Philly.com+Twitter&utm_source=t.co&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Philly.com+Twitter+Account).  For some of the soccer players, they may be leaving after this semester to find another university according to the Inquirer story.

These two teams played about three weeks ago at Cabrini and Neumann won 3-2.  The game was tied 0-0 at half.  Neumann broke the logjam in 52nd minute to go up 1-0, but Cabrini scored two goals in quick succession and was up 2-1 by the 59th minute.  They ran out of gas, however, and about ten minutes later Neumann scored two goals in less than in a minute -- both off set plays -- to take the game.  Still, Cabrini will have hope for this game after taking down Marywood in the semis, a team that it lost to in the regular season 3-1.  Cabrini can also take heart from the fact that Muhlenberg, a team it lost to only 1-0 in Allentown less than two weeks ago, has made the Centennial Conference championship game.  Neumann, however, comes in on an 8 game unbeaten streak and will have the home field advantage.

The Keeper was out anticipating a through ball.  Cul was moving forward with a line of 3 attackers ahead of him vs 3 or 4 defenders.  I expected him to play wide right or maybe a through ball elsewhere.  When he shot I was like huh?  Guessing the Keeper had the same reaction.  Placement couldn't have been better.  Upper 90s and may have hit the post or crossbar (I couldn't tell.)  Think I read in some game notes it was 40 which sounds about right.  Not quite Beckhamesque, but still a very cheeky goal.

Cabrini's soccer program ends after a hard-fought game lost on a 21st minute PK.  Credit to the coaches and team for a season that probably exceeded expectations.  Best of luck to all of them finding places for next season.

Yes very nice field awareness. Great heads-up.  Hopefully he'll be alright. Goals like that are so so tough. Nobody is going to remember the gritty ones. Nature of the position. Brutal game.
