Let's see how the wifi holds up today. Yesterday was ANNOYING.

Just a random D1 Note...If you have 5 minutes watch the highlights of Fordham beating Duke in PK"S last night to advance to the Elite 8.

For a school like Fordham to beat ACC schools and advance to the Elite 8 with all the disadvantages they have recruiting is utterly amazing. They have maybe 5 foreigners but the rest are homegrown. Their starting GK was a stud at Kent School. I cannot imagine how many scholarships Fordham gets but it cannot be many. A truly great story..3 of the last Quarter-Finals are on today at 5pm...

Thanks for the scoop!  I know a couple of Fordham players (both internationals) who graduated last year, so I'm happy that their former teammates were able to advance.  Nuhu's unconventional approach to taking a PK was interesting to see. I did note, though, that Fordham violated Mr. Right's Rules of Order by having the backup GK take what turned out to be the game-winning PK  ;)

I remember Nuhu from his boarding school days but lost track of where he went to college. Even in high-school he combined superb athleticism with excellent technique. A superb talent to say the least.

Thanks for the update!

Although compliments aside, I just watched the highlights of the game and I can't say I was inspired by the goalkeeping on any of the four goals

LOL I know but it was like the ninth kicker so at some point you run out of options...lol but yea that was interesting for sure..hit a banger though..I think both GK's kicked haha..another thing I am not crazy about..

Actually... As a goalie I can tell you, we spend a TON of our down time taking PKs. It might seem unconventional, but most of us learn to perfect a shot that hits the side netting with pace.

Ommadawn

I'm sure a lot of folks know this, but the Duke GK is Christian Pulisic's cousin and has spent time on Borussia Dortmund's U19 team.

I actually reffed ann EDP Final game this weekend and the game went to kicks fron the mark and it came down to the goalies and the one missed bc it looked like he never took a PK before.

Maybe it's an old school thing? I'm just saying it's not that surprising (to me) to see keepers step up and knock them home. Now that I think about it, I very rarely had a goalie-specific coach... we were mostly self-directed until it was time to "go to goal."

I think that has shifted over the years. Heck, I know my high school has a goalie specific coach now. Back when I played there, it was just a varsity and JV coach, no assistants. And we were  in a hotbed county.

GK's definitely practice hitting PK's more than field players. I will grant you that just because of where they are located during practice..Usually next to a goal..Also, you are correct GK's usually strike a ball just as well if not better than field players for the most part. To me it is purely psychological for the GK. Obviously, I am not throwing all GK's in this basket but as a coach "I" just do not like the look and feel of my GK hitting a PK in a pressure situation. They have enough on their mind during the PK's.

Biggest reason goalies practice and end up being pretty good at PKs is because there doesn't tend to be segments of practice broken up for players to shoot so keepers can practice. It ends up being part of the warm-ups or separate goalie practice. I shot PKs on our starter (and visa versa) nearly every day. I actually was horrible at kicking a stationary ball well (if it was moving, I had a pretty incredible shot to be honest). However, I developed a technique for PK shooting that was pretty good. I had to. There was no choice. Only way our starter, my friend, was going to be properly prepared was if I worked on that shot specifically.

While coaches may not go to their keepers often for a lot of reasons as described, I am in no way surprised a keeper could bury a PK.

The NCAA D2 soccer semifinals are underway, and Carson-Newman women are up, 1-0, over UC Colorado Springs at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City.  The video is streaming well on NCAA.com and on the NCAA Sports App.

wow at least D2 understand that players need that days rest in between games. you shouldn't have to work your entire season to be thanked with a national championship game the day after the semi finals...
