Great game between Mary Wash and Catholic---congrats on Wash for the win, but the Lady Cardinals deserve a lot of credit too.  They proved they can play with Mary Washington and next time around beat them.  It was a tough situation at the end--Catholic was pressing a bit, 2 players back, but of course they didn't want to foul so they laid back a little...

Of course I'd rather have seen a win, but a loss at the buzzer to the #4 team in the country is nothing to be ashamed about.  I hope they get one more shot---and that's the one that counts.

I agree the Cardinals deserve credit. They are tough at home (Just ask Scranton). If they do meet again though, it's likely to be in Fredericksburg.  :)

What a game UMW wins it at the buzzer 63-61.
A tightly officiated game and both teams played their hearts out. One of the most thrilling endings I've seen. 4 Seconds left, inbound to mid court, quick pass to the wing and the layup at the buzzer. WOW...........

You're much more polite about the officiating than they are on the CAC's men's board.  But both teams played through it. When Catholic managed to tie under pressure with under 5 seconds it looked like OT, but then ... Shifflett to Bruen to Clarkin for the UMW win! WOW is right.

Matt - Catholic's tough, especially at DuFour. They deserve lots of credit and respect. But the game did answer a question you raised before

I think that Mary Washington probably is very good.

But an alternative explanation for the results that have been mentioned is simply, "the home team won." All those games were home wins for the teams in question.  Lets see what happens when CUA heads to Arlington and Mary Wash to DC.

Matt Letourneau

It sure did.  But I think since I posted that, Mary Washington has exceeded expectations beyond what even you guys expected.  They are a young team, I didn't think they'd run the table.   Catholic won at Marymount, too, so that part of it was answered also.

I can only fight so many officiating battles!

That was one of the best played women's games I've ever seen though--well, I got there at halftime, so half's.  I think Jackie fouling out for Catholic was pivotal (and no, I didn't like that call)-she's one of their best (and most clutch) players.

UMW's Liz Hickey didn't get 10 minutes of playing time before fouling out.  That was a "big" loss for the Eagles. But both teams focused on winning and played through the fouls.  When Catholic's players fouled out near the end and others were carrying 4 fouls it cost CUA; but it also showed UMW's depth - UMW got no one in foul trouble except Hickey

40 fouls called in 40 minutes, in a game that wasn't particularly physical...
Actually Bates had four fouls for UMW.

Matt Letourneau

Catholic got upset by St. Mary's today.

Let's just say they didn't play their best basketball.  Made a furious comeback to actually take the lead, but blew some open layups, SMC was playing really hard and wanted the win, and...well, I suppose you can call it a learning experience.  Or at least Coach Carey will try to turn it into one, I'm sure...

Hmm...Scranton's one loss is to Mary Washington.  Mary Washington, undefeated, has beaten Catholic...twice.  Scranton is ranked higher than Mary Washington.

Seems like Mary Washington is getting screwed if you ask me.

I don't know if I'd use that exact terminology  ;) but I agree with your point. At this stage of the race all that matters is where you're ranked at the end of the year.

Not in the true Massey Ratings. The ones you're looking at are the dumbed-down ones he had to create for the BCS.

In the true Massey Ratings, the ones that had Millikin #1 during the season last year and are the better predictors, Mary Washington is 12th.

Scranton's loss is to Catholic. Mary Washington has not played Scranton.

Pick whatever you like, but the one I linked has an actual track record. Yours has never proven anything.

Sorry, that's what I meant.  I was at the Catholic-Scranton game.  That's why I was pointing out what Catholic had done against Mary Wash compared to Scranton.

The point stands.
