UMW 63 - Christopher Newport 48
Junior All-America center Liz Hickey scored a team-high 13 points, and added six blocked shots and five rebounds, as the 18th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Christopher Newport University, 63-48, on Saturday at a nearly full Goolrick Gymnasium. UMW improves to 8-2 on the season, while CNU falls to 6-5.
After CNU scored the first basket, UMW assumed command of the lead, pushing the margin to as many as 11 points (at 18-7, 20-9, and 22-11), but the Lady Captains answered back led by five points by Nikki Rowland (game high 15 points) to cut the deficit to three, at 24-21, with 2:37 left in the first half. A pair of free throws by Katy Larson and a layup by Hickey advanced the lead to seven, and Amandas Bates hit a three pointer at the buzzer to give UMW a 31-21 halftime edge.
CNU chipped away at the lead in the second half, until cutting the deficit to three, at 49-46, with 5:45 remaining. But UMW would outscore the Lady Captains, 14-2, from that point on.
Larson had 12 points for UMW, and Leigh Kampman had 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Lisa Tracy led UMW with eight rebounds. Rowland was the lone CNU player in double figures, with 15.

York College won the Lycoming College Hoops for Hounds Tournament (cool name for a tournament) with their 69-63 win over SUNY Brockport on Saturday. Kristen Daly led the Spartans as she poured in 26 points while she also pulled down six rebounds and collected four steals. Daly was 8-for-14 from the field and a blistering 9-for-10 from the free throw line as she earned All-Tournament team honors. Sophomore Keli Ward earned the tournament MVP as she added 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals in 37 minutes of action. Ward scored a career-high 34 points in Friday's double-overtime win over Rowan. Kemp was the third Spartan in double figures with 10 points including a huge defensive effort for the green and white.
In the 90-83 double overtime win over Rowan on Friday, Daly added a career-high 31 points to Ward's 34-point effort.
The Spartans bounced back from Wednesday's disappointing loss to McDaniel. The Spartans have won five of their last six and eight of their last 10.
York jumps back into conference play on Wednesday as they host St. Mary's at 6:00 pm at the Grumbacher Center.

Well, the CAC sure is crowded at the top early in the league play with 5 teams with only 1 loss. And it sure is crowded at the bottom too with the other 3 teams have 3 or more losses each. York at CUA looks like the weekend's most interesting match up. Salisbury at St. Mary's will probably go a long way to determining which way their seasons go.

Is it true the MU's Tara Eddy has suffered a season/career ending injury?  :(
