The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team shot a school record 63.2% from the floor, and set a Goucher Sports & Rec Center record with 11 three point baskets in a 91-39 win in Towson on Wednesday. Junior guard Sarah Flanagan scored a game-high 20 points to lead three Eagles in double figures, as UMW (12-2, 4-1 CAC) runs its win streak to eight straight.
Mary Washington dominated form the opening tip, scoring the first 10 points, and then, after a pair of Gopher free throws, scored the next 29 points to lead, 39-2, with 5:49 remaining in the first half en route to a 49-10 halftime advantage. UMW shot 66.7 % from the floor in the first half (18-27), and limited Goucher to 3-33 shooting (9%).
In addition to Flanagan's 20 points, junior forward Leigh Kampman and junior center Liz Hickey each scored 10 points, and Debbie Bruen, Ashton Mitchell, and Ashley Reed each had eight points. Flanagan and Mitchell each had six rebounds for the Eagles.
Goucher was led by Shadae Swan, who had 17 points. Amber Smith had seven rebounds for the Gophers (3-11, 1-5).
Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday, when they visit St. Mary's College at 2 p.m.

Glad to see that UMW SID on duty tonight :)

Bad one from the Spartans against Marymount as the Saints go home winners 81-75 in overtime. The youthful Spartans make a number of mistakes down the stretch as York should have won in OT. It could be the kind of game that a young team learns a great deal from.

The CAC matches to watch today are Marymount at York and Catholic at Salisbury. I think York will win at home. Salisbury too. St. Marys should get its first CAC win tonight.

Well, at least I got the St. Mary's game right.  :D  UMW's Sarah Flanagan broke out for sure with a half dozen 3s against Goucher. Goucher's Shadae Swan's the league's top scorer. She was 6 for 26 from the floor against UMW. It would take at least three games for a UMW player to take 26 field goal attempts.

Tomorrow's most interesting CAC match ups are Mary Washington at St. Mary's and
Salisbury at Marymount. Both games have some potential for upsets but Mary Washington and Marymount should win. Salisbury needs a win though.

Mary Washington "broke two Sports & Recreation Center records" at Goucher Wednesday. "One was for highest field goal percentage by a team and the other for most three-point baskets by a team." http://meyerhoff.goucher.edu/legacy_apps/athletics/template_content.cfm?view=press&press_id=1103

if the Mary Washington St. Mary game had been close, it could have turned on the refereeing. one of the three was consistently horrible.  :'(

mwcsid

Sarah Flanagan named CAC Player of the Week.
:)

Balder Eagle

thanks for the assist bbald eagle............
With Catholic having 2 losses in the CAC (to the other#1 and the #2 in the CAC) tonights game may prove to be most interesting. Most curious to see if the ball gets to the low post and the three point threat continues for UMW   :o
