UMW's Baker, Bruen Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - University of Mary Washington seniors Justin Baker and Debbie Bruen have been named to the Academic All-District basketball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America in the district. Baker was named to the men's first team, and will be eligible for Academic All-America honors, while Bruen was named to the third team.
Baker, who carries a 3.49 overall GPA as a business major, leads UMW in scoring again this season, and recently scored his 1,000th career point. After transferring from the College of William & Mary, Baker has been equally impressive on the floor and in the classroom, leading UMW to a 13-7 record this season.
Bruen, who earned All-America honors on the floor last season, adds academic all-district honors this year. A psychology major, Bruen carries a 3.29 overall GPA. The reigning CAC Player of the Week, Bruen leads UMW in scoring for the fourth consecutive season.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.

congrats to debbie for making the academic all-distric team.  Best wishes to her getting well.  I hear that she is still quite sick.  The next few games should allow her to get the needed rest before heading into the tourney.

GO EAGLES!

Catholic at York has to be the game of the night. Catholic seems to picking up some steam.
Mary Washington at Gallaudet involves no suspense.
St. Mary's at Salisbury has a little but not much chance for an upset but even that wouldn't mean much in the standings.

York College sophomore point guard Keli Ward recorded the second triple-double in the history of the women's basketball program as the Spartans notched a 76-60 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Catholic University on Thursday night in York. The triple-double is the first since Brooke Davis recorded 15 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists in the January 26, 1999 win at Goucher College. Davis also had seven blocked shots and six steals in the Spartans' 85-46 victory over the Gophers.

Ward finished the game with 17 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, one blocked shot and one steal in just 32 minutes of action. Ward was 4-for-5 from the floor, 3-for-4 from three, and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Senior captain Jess Kemp was outstanding in the game with 17 points, three assists, three steals, and two rebounds. Kemp drained five threes in the game as she tied Ward for the game-high scoring honors. Junior Kristen Daly  and sophomore Amy Fry each added 12 points. Fry had seven rebounds, four assists and a steal while Daly pulled in four caroms and had a pair of steals. Sophomore Chanel Perez had nine points and nine rebounds in the victory.

Maria Rojas led the Cardinals with a game-high tying 17 points. Rojas was 7-for-12 from the floor including 2-for-5 from three, and 1-for-1 from the line. Rojas also had five rebounds and three assists. Kate Robinson chipped in with 12 points and three boards while Jackie DeBorger added 11 points, three assists, and a pair of rebounds.

Bruen was in street clothes and on the bench for the Gallaudet game last night. Word is she will be dressed for the game tomorrow.

York at Marymount with Salisbury at Catholic tomorrow may prove interesting in regards to seeding for the CAC Tournament.

Eaglescout

It might be a factor because I have never heard Bruen missing a game for illness no matter who the opponent was.  Then again the regular season is pretty much a lock and it is better for her to be well rested so applebury is probably just being extra cautious.  I do not think her sickness should play a huge role in the seeding especially with the depth of this eagle team.  This being her senior year I wish her a speedy recovery to back on the court and finish up the season strong.

Final from Marymount

Marymount 68-York 63

That pretty much locks up the top three seeds in the tournament.
1. UMW
2. MMU
3. York

The Spartans are done with their CAC schedule and finish 10-4. Marymount is 9-3 with two to play but even if they do lose at Salisbury on Wednesday, they finish up the year with a game against Gallaudet. They hold the tiebreaker with a pair of wins over York.
