Final:
Marymount 60-York 44

Lowest offensive output of the season for York, second lowest was the 53-46 win over Mary Washington.
Bad way to end a record tying season.

Rematch of last year's championship game... at the same place!

Good luck to both teams!

The anticipation is awfully sweet   ;D

Will the Marymount Fans succeed in making The Saints feel at home at Goolrick Gym as they did last year? Will their colorful St. Bernard be fed bones from the faithful fab five (or is it six)? Will the Lady Saints boldly once again make their entrance though the front door for warm-ups?

Will The Eagle come out of the closet and be dressed for the game? Will the boy's team make a loud appearance to offset the St. Bernard and his entourage? Will the Fans have their Eagle Nation shirts on?

Rest assured Coach Finney will come with his team prepared to play and that Coach Applebury's Lady Eagles have been waiting a year for this game.

Congrats to Marymount and Mary Washington on making the CAC championship game.

I also want to congratulate my Spartans. A young team that returns all five of their top scorers and four of their five starters next year. They didn't play well tonight but the returning talent and an exciting group of prospective student-athletes make it a very exciting future for the Spartans.

One interesting note about tonight's game.

Free throw attempts: Marymount 26-York 4
Free throw makes: Marymount 18-York 3
Fouls: Marymount 9 - York 17
Difference in free throw makes: 15
Score differential: 16 points

It doesn't sound like York played well enought to win anyhow but it is interesting in the very large discrepency between the two teams at the line. Marymount hammered the Spartans on the boards again (47-27) which is probably the biggest reason Marymount is 3-0 against York this year. The other two games were close but York went over six minutes without scoring turning a six point deficit into a 19-point hole, essentially making it almost impossible for York to come back in the second half.

Best of luck to both teams. I hope we have a classic championship game.

So dmac, should I set up a table and get a phone line for a d3hoops broadcast on Saturday?  ;) The game will be somewhere between 1 and 2 pm I think.

Bruen (19 in 25 min.) and Hickey (16-10-8 blocks) played up to their status as All-Americans tonight. Leigh Kampman's toughness on the boards and on D was again HUGE, what a difference she makes. Bates was again big on several fronts, and her 25 footer at the first half buzzer was big going in to the locker room.

mwcsid... I wouldn't bet on it. Need to be in Frederick, MD by 6 PM that night... and I have tried that trip up 95 after a women's championship game... just trying to get to Arlington... and it wasn't pretty.

However... you never know... I will have to check with the rest of the "powers-to-be" :)!

Quoting Santiago from before the Season Kicked off.

"1. Mary Washington (they are not stopping until they have a national title...they have grown since bruen and deena appeared in fredericksburg and I don't think deena will allow senior bruen to leave without a strong showing.)
2. Marymount (just thought I would mix it up...you don't have the amount of success of marymount has had over the last 15 years based on a couple of players coming and going...that kind of success is built on good coaching)"

I think Mary Washington is still on track if they are full strength.  Are there any updates on sarah and larson?

i'm pretty sure Sarah Flanagan won't be playing again this year because of an injury  :'(

congrats to the eagle ladies

UMW 53, MMT 42
The eighth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Marymount University, 53-42, on Saturday afternoon at Goolrick Gymnasium to claim the Capital Athletic Conference tournament championship. The Eagles, now 26-2 on the season and winners of 22 straight games, will await the announcement on when and where they will play in the NCAA Division III Tournament next week.
Marymount opened the game by racing out to an 11-0 lead in the opening five minutes of play. But the Eagle defense tightened and the offense awoke to outscore the Saints, 25-13, the rest of the half to take a 25-24 advantage into halftime. The improved offense and defense was amplified in the second half, as UMW shot 48.1% from the floor, while limiting the Saints to just five field goals and 20.8% shooting in the second frame. Debbie Bruen scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half, going 6-7 from the floor in the same span that Liz Hickey made her first 10 shots.
Hickey scored a game-high 21 points on 10-11 shooting from the floor, and added eight rebounds and seven blocked shots to pace the Eagle attack. Bruen scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and added three assists and two blocks. Marymount was led by Terrell White's 13 points and Kathleen Brown's 10 points.
