Gallaudet Gets 2-Year Probation

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/03/AR2007080301957.html

"Gallaudet University athletics are on probation for the next two years, according to school officials, because of an ineligible student-athlete who competed in the 2005-06 volleyball season."

***

"The new provost, Stephen Weiner, will follow up with a two-year review of all sports at Gallaudet. Gallaudet teams will continue to play in conference games."

The new Salisbury coach:

"Charisse Mapp will become the ninth women's basketball head coach in the 52-year history of the program. Mapp, 42, comes to Salisbury after serving as an assistant coach at Princeton University last season."

And the new Hood coach:

"Jay Butler, whose experience includes head coaching stints at Columbia University, St. Mary's College of Maryland and Brown University, takes over for Tracey Kelley-Franklin, who resigned her position in July to take a position at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick."

Two Ivies.

Pat Coleman

That makes for a really unusual career path for Butler. Wonder what that's about.

Beats me, but his career path apparently took him out of coaching and into ministry to coaches, according to Hood's release -

"Since 2005, Butler has served as the coaches ministry director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Ruston, La., during which time he has ministered to coaches and led bible study groups for various colleges, high schools and junior high schools in five parishes (counties) across the region."

Michael Weinstock appointed Interim Athletic Director

Michael Weinstock has been appointed interim athletic director for Gallaudet's Athletic and Intramural Programs. Weinstock has been the coordinator of Athletics, P.E., Recreation, and Intramural Programs for approximately the past 11 years at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD). Prior to that position he was the assistant athletic director/intramurals coordinator at MSSD for 12 years. Weinstock is a 1976 graduate of MSSD and a 1981 alumnus of Gallaudet, where he lettered in basketball for four years. He went on to earn his master's degree from Gallaudet in 1994.

During his time at MSSD, Weinstock was very active in the "M" Booster Club and helped increase donations, sponsorships, and support for the organization. In 2000, he founded the Clerc Classic boys and girls basketball and cheerleading tournament, which had top teams from the nation's deaf schools competing for the national title. He has coached a number of middle school, high school, and college-level sports teams for the past 26 years. Under his tenure as coach, the girls' and boys' basketball teams won numerous National Deaf Prep championships --16 of them while he was athletic director. He coached the girls' softball team, which also earned special national recognition. Silent News honored Weinstock as Coach of the Year in boys basketball, girls basketball, football, and girls softball. In 1997 he coached the U.S.A. women's basketball team, which won a gold medal at the Deaf World Games in Denmark. He was also the director of the U.S.A. Team Development at the Deaf Olympic Games in Italy in 2001. Weinstock has stated that one of his proudest moments was being selected as Coach of the Month by ESPN.com in 2000. Coaching has been a big part of Weinstock's professional career and he is also pleased that a number of staff who worked for him throughout the years have become athletic directors at deaf schools across the nation.

Weinstock looks forward to working with the Gallaudet community and will be committed to ensuring the integrity of all athletic programming and in bringing them to a higher level of standards, competitiveness, and recognition. One of his main priorities will be to focus on academic issues for student-athletes and to foster increased collaborative efforts between all athletic programs and faculty.

Does anyone else think it's now or never for York with Kristen Daly in her senior year (and Keli Ward a junior)?

eagle_knievel

York will be tested right out of the gate with Ferrum, who were just picked to win
the USA South Athletic Conference that includes the CNU Captains. Ferrum will be
looking to make a point, having been denied thier ticket to the NCAA first round
so decisively.

bbald eagle

Ferrum graduated several starters from last year when it won the regular season in its league. York's Daly, a senior now, and Ward were York's best last year and it''s now or never for Daly. The game will be on a neutral court - though Ferrum was unbeaten at home last year (10-0) it struggled away from home (11-7) and in non-conference games (9-5). It should be a good early matchup to hint at whether York will be moving up from the middle of the CAC or whether Ferrum may drop from the top rung of the USA South.

Women's DIII News Preseason Top 25 2007-2008

bbald eagle

Ranking Capital U #1 in the nation when it didn't win its league or make the NCAA tournament last year is a stretch that greatly undercuts the validity of those Women's DIII News rankings, in my opinion.  ::)  If I recall correctly Women's DIII News is a one man show.

Perhaps the truest thing said in the Women's DIII News press release on Capital's website is: "Maintaining any ranking will be a challenge for the Crusaders."

eagle_knievel

Absolutely correct bbald. Ranking Capital as no. 1 is "crazy talk" as some would say.
I'm reminded of the famous movie quote" pay no attention to the man behind the curtain".
Maybe they(he) mixed up the Capital ranking with Mary Wash? HeeHeee ;D
Anyways, I'm looking forward to another great season for the Mary Wash ladies. Does
D3Hoops produce a pre-season Ranking?
