I think that Mary Washington probably is very good.

But an alternative explanation for the results that have been mentioned is simply, "the home team won." All those games were home wins for the teams in question.  Lets see what happens when CUA heads to Arlington and Mary Wash to DC.

It's way too early to spot a trend ... but now that you mention it, Catholic is 5-0 at home and 0-1 on the road.   ;D  And they're off to N.J. Thursday for Stockton, which is undefeated so far. ;)  I hope they knock off Stockton.  Let's keep the losses within the CAC part of the schedule.

Matt Letourneau

Oh yeah, well that was part of my point--CUA's big wins (Scranton & MMT) were both at home, as was MW's.

Stockton game is tough--extra motivation for the head coach at least...she was an assistant at Stockton last year.

There not much discussion about the 6-0 Lady Gulls from Salisbury, so I decided to give them some "play".  Coach B has the ladies off to a great start.  I hope they keep the momentum going.  I noticed that Gen Olds is on Salisbury coaching staff this year.

Won/Loss records of CAC opponents YTD:

Team
SAL- 6-0     Opponents 11-25
UMW- 6-0   Opponents 13-22
CUA 5-1      Opponents 23-10
MU 5-1       Opponents 19-16

I wouldn't get too excited about being on top right now.  Looks like Catholic has played the stronger schedule. I don't know how much credence you can put into these kinds of numbers but I think early tough games pay off down the stretch.

You are right, but yes, CUA has played an extremely hard schedule so far, and its going to get even harder with Stockton this week, who is undefeated.

I would hope that given the split last week, the Cardinals will stay in the Top 25, but we'll see.  I realize it means nothing, but its good for visibilty.  People are used to CUA having a good men's team, but there has been a concerted effort to bring women's basketball up to the level that the men have been at and so far its been very successful---a Top 25 ranking helps reinforce that.

The Catholic women have been at a high level the last couple of seasons. They are still there. The recognition and visibility that comes with being in the top 25 is good for them and the CAC.  With the expanded NCAA pool this year, hopefully more than one CAC team will dance. I suspect that if Catholic drops out of the top 25 due to the loss to UMW, they' ll be back in a later poll.

#18 UMW 68, Apprentice 58

Liz Hickey led the way with 21, Bruen added 17, and Flanagan 12. 7-0 start, one win shy of tyine the school record for wins to start the season set last year.

Matt Letourneau

Would I be correct in thinking that game was closer than it should have been?  ???

mwcsid

Well, they're a lot more athletic top to bottom than anyone in the CAC...
That type of team has given us trouble in the past so a win is a win. Good to see the post players (Hickey and Bruen) step up against a quicker but smaller opponent.
The versatility of the Eagles with their ten deep rotation has been as key as anything - no one's averaging more than about 12 per game, but everyone brings something different to the table.

UMW only won by six there last year, so it's a good test against a team that gives a different look.

eaglemaniac

I'm not so sure the rotations have been that favorable for UMW.  I also don't think that they have figured out which rotations are working the best together as yet. I'm sure they will get it down eventually. Just an opinion.

Well, that is true, but it's great to be 7-0 as they're figuring it out...
;)

Matt Letourneau

Fair enough, just wondering.
