1. Mitchell College- 9 (3)
2. Eastern Nazarene College- 7 (1)
3. New England Col. – 5
4. Lesley- 3

Can somebody better at math figure out how these votes were tabulated? This doesn't seem to add up.

That does look strange. The only way I made it work doesn't make any sense at all.

Mitchell -3,3,3
East. Naz - 3,2,2
N.E - 2,2,1
Lesley - 1,1,1

But wouldn't this mean they only voted on a 1-3 scale? I'm confused

exactly. Most preseason coaches polls you don't rank your own team, you rank everyone else.

I've not heard of that before. Lots that don't allow you to vote yourself #1.

ziggy

The way the MIAA coaches poll works is each coach submits a ranking of 1-7, omitting themselves. Then it works like the top 25 poll where first place vote gets 7 points, second is six points,..., one point for seventh place.
Here is last year's poll: https://www.miaa.org/sports/mbkb/2021-22/releases/PreseasonPoll
So Trine's 49 points last year made them a "unanimous" number one, despite Calvin getting one first place vote because Brooks Miller would have been submitting a ballot with everyone but Trine listed.

Interestingly enough the NECC had the exact vote tabulations in the 2021-2022 season, thought the order of teams were different.  Maybe it's not so much of an oddity if you are only ranking 4 teams, can't vote for yourself, and there's a clear 4th place team.  But yeah, the numbers???

ronk

Mitchell gets 3 1st place votes x 3 = 9
Eastern gets 1 1st and 2 secs = 7
New England gets 2 secs and a 3rd = 5
Lesley gets all 3 3rds = 3

Well that does indeed make sense. I always thought coaches couldn't vote for themselves as #1. But I think it's better to just not allow to vote for yourself at all. Thanks for that clarification. Like Ryan, I had not heard that before with the polls I pay attention to (which isn't many)

My assumption of the vote

Mitchell voted: ENC, NEC, Lesley
ENC voted: Mitchell, NEC, Lesley
NEC voted: Mitchell, ENC, Lesley
Lesley voted: Mitchell, ENC, NEC

That gives Mitchell their 3x3=9, ENC 3+2x2=7, NEC 2x2+1=5, Lesley 3x1=3
