And now a defensive lapse on a corner and TLU rifles a ball in for the go ahead goal....

Wow! What a finish.  What a game!

Seriously. I kept track of the events in my post up-thread, but that was an impressive game between two really well-coached and talented teams.  Texas D3 soccer showing off for the rest of the country.

Wow.  What a goal on the equalizer for Trinity.

I've mostly been watching the Trinity-TLU game, but I had one eye on this one after I saw that McMurry scored.  I was going to write that this game seemed to be one of those I mentioned in the Southwestern write-up, where one team dominated, but the other team nicked in a goal and then just absorbed pressure.  UST had 12 shots in the first half to 1 for McMurry, which was the goal they scored in the 12th minute.  I switched to it when Trinity went to half, though, just in time to see the UST GK pick up a ball in his box and quickly kick a perfect left-footed side volley punt down the middle of the field to a sprinting Daniel Castro who slotted it past the on-rushing McMurry keeper to tie it up in the 45th minute.  That kind of symbolizes how St. Thomas sometimes plays given their lack of a true offensive game plan.  Lots of technical skill and passing, signifying nothing, but they score when they throw all that away and unleash their superior athleticism.

I didn't keep up with this game because of the Trinity-TLU barnburner, but this apparently had a wild ending too.

McMurry 2 - St. Thomas 1

It looks like the UST GK Christo Gayoso committed a penalty in the box in the 89th minute for which he received a yellow and McMurry scored the PK to win 2-1.  St. Thomas outshot them 22-7, but loses for the first time in three tries to Scheiner, which had been outscored 15-2 in their three games since UST moved to the SCAC.  With Southwestern tying Scheiner, there are openings for teams to move up if they take their chances.  McMurry goes to 3-7-1 and 1-3 in the SCAC.

Quote from: Kuiper on October 11, 2024, 06:49:59 PMHALF:  Trinity 1 - Texas Lutheran 0

Really impressive goal by Trinity, worked through a bunch of intricate one touch passing to the right side, top, and through the box, before being passed into the opposite corner.  It took a deflection from the defender, which is the reason the GK looked fooled (and the announcers are giving short-shrift to how critical that deflection was because he was set up to get the ball without it), but Trinity earned that goal through some impressive play and they weren't going to score any other way given how strong TLU is defensively.

UPDATE:  Trinity 1 - Texas Lutheran 1

What a goal by Louis Hart in the 61st minute!  Diving header on a beautiful cross to the six yard box that left the Trinity GK frozen

UPDATE:  Texas Lutheran 2 - Trinity 1

TLU scores a nice goal on a scramble off a corner kick.  You usually don't see a defender up for a corner have a clean chance for a side volley on a ball like that.

UPDATE:  Texas Lutheran 2 - Trinity 2

WOW!!!!  Really impressive goal by Will Powell with a flicked kick in the box

UPDATE:  Trinity 3 - Texas Lutheran 2

Holy Crap!  Luke Chandler, the CB, scores on a great shot from the far post to take the lead with 41 seconds left

FINAL:  Trinity 3 - Texas Lutheran 2

Instant classic game, and not just because Trinity came back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 with 2 goals in the last 3 minutes.  Just a great game between two really organized and well-coached teams full of talented players. A great representation of D3 soccer (and a top flight broadcast as well with good commentators, multiple angle shots, and replays all at no cost).

Thought I would move this up in case anyone wanted a quick summary of the game.

UPDATE:  Here's a link to a post with video of the winning goal

And the go ahead with 41 seconds left.  Holy smokes.  What a game.

Well I don't need convincing. Nothing lacked quality. Good goal keeping, good sequences, good game flow.

I think I know where to turn for Friday Night Lights now.

Couple of additional results in Region X tonight:

Colorado College 3 - Concordia 0

The final score flatters Colorado College.  It was a 0-0 tie for most of the game, with Concordia actually out-shooting Colorado College 7-3 in the first half, holding the corner kick edge 2-0, and forcing CC's GK to make 5 saves.  Colorado College got on the board in the 77th minute and tacked on two more less than a minute apart in the 86th and 87th minutes to turn a very tight game into what looks like a route.  Regardless, it's a good away result for Colorado, moving it to 9-1-2 and 4-0 in the SCAC.

George Fox 3 - Linfield 1

Linfield surprised George Fox by scoring in the 2nd minute in this game, but GF didn't press snooze on that wake-up call, roaring back with goals in the 14th, 31st  and 45th minutes to take the 3-1 lead, which it held through the second half.  GF is now 8-2-1 and 4-2-1 in the NWC.

CC was sluggish the first half, for sure, but I think saying a 3-0 win was somehow a misleading or unwarranted result is a bit stingy. If Concordia outshot CC first half 7-3, CC outshot Concordia 11-3 the second half (not mentioned), so I think another take might have been "CC found its footing and outshot CTX 11-3 the second half, eventually capitalizing in the 77th minute and twice more before match end." I like a team that can pull out a win, even when the game wasn't their finest for all 90.

That's fair.  Didn't mean to slight Colorado College and definitely didn't say the result was unwarranted.  It's just that a 3-0 score in soccer is sufficiently uncommon given the difficulty of scoring that someone might look at the final score and assume this was an easy game for Colorado College or that they dominated the game, which isn't really true.  As you say, though, good teams can pull out a win even when they don't have their best game and Colorado College is definitely a good team. And, as I said, it's a good away result (against a decent Concordia team I might add).

Agreed re: Concordia and also as to the fact that it wasn't as though CC didn't have to get their act together to score that first goal. Was definitely not a rout in that sense!

Ron Boerger

I'm glad those of you who watched last night enjoyed the TLU-Trinity match - though who could have predicted two goals in the last 3' to secure a win!  Key on the winning goal was GK Satpathy's well placed free kick from inside his defensive half in the last minute which somehow found the head of a Trinity attacker in the box.

Someone commented on the condition of the pitch - Coach McGinlay takes pride in his namesake surface, and they did quite a bit of work over the summer from posts I've seen.  They are also fortunate enough to have reclaimed water to use on campus and this, I believe, is the only natural field remaining on campus, so they put it to good use.

Playing any sport on an artificial surface in the Texas heat must be torture.  I complain about the frequency of boots destroyed by glue failure here.  I can't imagine the budget there.

Couple of afternoon games in the SCIAC:

CMS 2 - Caltech 0

Caltech held firm in the first half, which ended in a 0-0 tie, but CMS scored in the 51st and then doubled their lead in the 84th.  CMS is now 9-2-1 and 5-2 in the SCIAC.

La Verne 2 - Pomona-Pitzer 2

On the one hand, P-P should be happy to pick up a point in the SCIAC after starting the season 0-5-1 in the SCIAC.  Nevertheless, they will disappointed since they scored first in the 23rd minute and had a 1-0 lead at the half which they doubled in the 54th minute, before La Verne scored goals in the 61st, and 77th minutes to get the tie.  La Verne gets some revenge after losing to Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 (in a game that was classified as non-conference) earlier in the season.  It is 2-4-1 in the SCIAC now, which keeps its faint hopes alive for a conference tournament spot alive.
