Danny Ramirez of STU issued a red card only 5 minutes into the TU-STU championship.  Unclear what he did (or said, seems more likely).

TU will be up a man for the remainder of the game.

Wow.

Trinity 0 - St. Thomas 0 early

WOW!  UST's Dany Ramirez was issued a red in the 6th minute and Trinity coach Paul McGinley got a yellow.  No idea what happened, but he must have said something.  For that to result in a red card this quickly, it had to be bad.  Not sure what McGinley said either.  Feels like this is a product of the refs trying to clamp down on the game from the get-go, but playing a man down for 85 minutes is going to be rough, especially with Taty Aleman not in the starting lineup.  I guess UST has won before being down men against TLU, but this is a really tall order.  My guess is Trinity will need to be on their best behavior too because the refs are on high alert.

D3Navy

Trinity seems to be coasting, almost lethargic.  Can't let this end 0-0.  They need to get on it.

D3Navy

We're missing huge chunks of the game because of poor camera work.  Can anyone get word to Cooper?

No idea how to contact them, but it seems like they have multiple cameras and a producer is occasionally hitting the wrong one.  They quickly switched from the camera pointed at the empty goal to the camera pointed at the goal where the corner kick was being taken on the last play.

D3Navy

They've missed two incidents resulting in yellow cards. Kinda important when a hyper-aggressive team like St. Thomas is playing.  This is a "professional" production, not volunteers or students.  Unacceptable.

PaulNewman

iirc Dany Ramirez got a red in the game right before the TLU match.

HALF:  Trinity 0 - St. Thomas 0

St. Thomas has managed to stay in it by playing tight defense and launching the occasional counter-attack despite being down a man.  What makes this bunkering different is that St. Thomas is really technical and good at playing out of the back without launching it, so it's often Trinity that has to run around chasing the ball a lot, rather than the typical park the bus strategy of kicking it long and engaging in desperation defense again when the ball quickly gets returned.

I think Trinity's Adjei is getting frustrated because St. Thomas seems to be doubling him whenever he gets the ball.  It was an incident between him and Ramirez that led to the red card early in the half and another foul and yellow card that left Adjei a little hobbled.  Trinity is probably going to need to be a little more aggressive to unbalance St. Thomas.  It's pretty unusual to be up a man from the first couple of minutes in the game yet have zero shots on goal and fewer shots overall (3 to 4).

At the end of 2OT

Trinity 0 - St. Thomas 0

We go to PKs.  Both teams pretty exhausted.  I have no idea why Trinity used so few subs in this game (really only two players until very late).  Meese and Adjei were exhausted and JC Rule was trying to cover for a lot of people.  St. Thomas is like a basketball team with a lot of rangy wings that are interchangeable.  They kept bringing in players who were able to run enough and sell out their bodies to help makeup for the man down.

It seems there is something about UST whereby they relish the dynamic.  The "against all odds" and "highly motivated by grievance" dynamics.  Won't even be challenging for them until they go down at least one more man lol.

D3Navy

Trinity would have more success if they play like THEY are a man down.

Ron Boerger

Heading into the second OT, Trinity has ten corners and exactly zero SOG to show for them.  Hard to believe when playing a man up basically the entire match.

FINAL:  St. Thomas beats Trinity in PKs 3-2

Otero was practicing all the dark arts on that PK shootout.  Earned a yellow card, but two Trinity players kicked it over and he made the save to win it, so I guess it was worth it.

Trinity now has to hope it has done enough for a Pool C bid when Colorado College may be above it in the rankings and Region X generally only gets one Pool C bid if that because of the relatively lower SoS

I am just sickened by that game....and far more upset than I was after my own team lost yesterday (and I was plenty upset).  UST as a team and school seems to have learned absolutely nothing.  The early red, the antics all over the field, the constant flopping and rolling around and laying on the ground, constant confrontations of the referee, and then maybe the worst display I've seen for PKs (and I've seen some bad ones).  The ref should have given the GK a straight red.  Unreal that he was premitted to do all that.  And then the announcer, the same one who said he saw nothing when UST's first PK taker today broke a TLU player's leg in two, was aghast when UST fouled the Trinity GK in the box and again said there was nothing.  He was so bad he started arguing with his color man.  One of the saddest things is that UST had a fair amount of supporters (including myself) heading into this season after last year's performance and Sweet 16 run.  I was a fan until that TLU game....and now I wish the program would be shut down or suspended for at least two years.

iirc Dany Ramirez got a red in the game right before the TLU match.

This might have solved the mystery of the UST athletic department staffer yelling at someone during the TLU match.  He kept yelling at someone named Dany, and if he was red carded before the game even started that would definitely track with him being the target.
