Quote from: Kuiper on April 27, 2024, 05:07:14 PMThis isn't about a DIII program, but it is DIII adjacent.  University of St. Katherine, a small NAIA school in San Diego, just suddenly announced that it is closing at the end of this academic year and filing for bankruptcy

https://thecoastnews.com/students-staff-devastated-by-university-of-saint-katherines-sudden-closure/

The reason it is DIII adjacent is that USK is one of the NAIA schools that show up on the non-conference schedule of one or more SCIAC teams ever year it seems.  In recent years, it has played Cal Tech, Occidental, La Verne, and Chapman and Chapman just released it's schedule for 2024 and it was supposed to host USK in its opening regular season game on Saturday, August 31st.

https://athletics.chapman.edu/sports/mens-soccer/schedule

Maybe Chapman convince one of its exhibition opponents to switch to that date, but my guess is that Chapman will go without and start the season on its road trip to NJ to play Stevens and Montclair State.

Incidentally, this is just one example of how difficult it is for these isolated conferences in Southern California and the Pacific Northwest.  The only non-conference games available to them without extensive and costly travel are these small, often financially precarious, DII or NAIA schools.  Another school in this situation that has sometimes played SCIAC schools -- the University of Antelope Valley -- also announced it was closing recently.
I just posted an article from the Washington Post on the Future of D3 Board.  Colleges are closing at one per week.

Calvin's 2024 schedule was posted on the Schedules thread.

They are traveling to Salem the third weekend of the season and playing Pacific Lutheran on Fri. Sept 13 and Willamette on Sat. Sept 14th.

That will be a strong early test for both NWC schools

D3Navy

Great news: Sam Theiss coming back to San Antonio from San Diego.  Scored 51 goals his senior year as the Boerne Greyhounds repeated as 4A Texas state champions.  Was third in his class academically.  Great fit at Trinity.

Definitely nice to see a kid come home.  I put that on the Go West thread earlier today in the commitments post (which I update in red, even though I don't re-post every time I update it so it drops down the list a bit).

Unfortunately, Theiss didn't play a minute in two years with the USD program.  I don't know the circumstances, but I know other kids where that has happened in that program in particular.  They had a really bad couple of years and switched to a more aggressive recruiting approach, which has paid off, but left kids stranded. This may or not be relevant to the playing time issue, but USD listed him as a midfielder, while Trinity is listing him as a forward.

I noticed that as well and he may not get a whole lot more time at Trinity (they seem to have a huge roster).  But I like the fact that there is a local option available that will result in more support for him and for the team in general.  And hopefully he'll get the chance to show why he was such an integral part of two Texas state champion teams!

Ron Boerger

Most of the D1>Trinity transfers Kuiper listed also saw little to no PT at their previous institutions, are Texas kids, and probably are hoping for at least some chance to get on the field.  The substitution rules going into effect for D1 next season may complicate that should they ever be applied to D3, but for now they're not a concern.

Cross-posting from the 2024 Schedules Thread some schedules of Region X schools or involving Region X schools

Whitworth

Whitworth is traveling to Texas the second week of the season to play Trinity at Trinity and Southwestern in Georgetown, TX.  Those could be good games.  Whitworth started slowly last year as Kevin Moon was named interim head coach after school ended and therefore didn't have a spring season to get to know his players, but the team only lost two games in conference (both to Pacific Lutheran) and finished 12-4-4.  This year, Moon was named permanent head coach and Cole Friesen, who only played 1 game as a freshman, but blossomed under Moon as a sophomore, scoring 24 goals and getting 5 assists, returns as a junior and should continue to be dangerous.

Whitman

After traveling to Texas last season, Whitman travels to Southern California the third weekend of the upcoming season to play at La Verne, Redlands, and Chapman.

Messiah

Of particular interest to those in the West is that Cal Lutheran is making the big cross-country trip this year to play at perennial power Messiah. I don't think Cal Lu has a single player on its roster from the east coast (and only one from east of Arizona I think), so this is mostly an experience, a strength-of-schedule boost, and an opportunity to spread their name a little on the east coast after the women's soccer team won a national championship last year, rather than an opportunity to reward some seniors by giving them an opportunity to play close to home.

Mary Washington

Of note here is that Colorado College is traveling to Virginia to play Mary Washington at Newport News on 9/21.  Presumably, they will also play Christopher Newport, likely on that Thursday or Friday.  This is made possible, in part, because of CC's block scheduling system.  Block 1 ends Wed. Sept 18th and Block 2 doesn't start until Mon 9/23, so they can schedule this trip without players missing any classes.

Methodist

Methodist opens the season by traveling to San Antonio to play Trinity and Southwestern.  So, we now know that Trinity and Southwestern are each playing Whitworth and Methodist.

Kuiper

Pomona-Pitzer just posted its schedule on its instagram page, although it's not up on its web page yet

They play UC Santa Cruz and Pacific Lutheran on opening weekend at Santa Cruz as part of a round robin and then hosts PLU's fellow NWC member Puget Sound the following weekend.  They have an interesting SCIAC draw this year (since they have gone away from the double round robin format, schools play some teams once and others twice).  They play Oxy, Redlands, Cal Lu, La Verne and Whittier twice, but CMS, Chapman, and Cal tech only once. On the one hand, this is a pretty tough draw since Oxy and Redlands were the class of the conference last season.  Plus, they only play CMS once and P-P gets up for that game no matter what the records (they beat them in the last game of the season in 2023).  On the other hand, having the 6th Street Rivalry game at CMS means it will be under the lights on a Saturday night and that should make for a pretty big combined crowd from the two schools that are on the same campus.  Also, if Cal Tech keeps trending up, it might not be a bad thing to only play them once.

Colorado College hasn't posted its full schedule yet, but it did post on Instagram the identity of its opening weekend foes at Stewart Field.  They are hosting Fontbonne and Concordia MN on Friday Aug 30 and Saturday Aug 31.  The second weekend, Colorado College posted that it is traveling to Lincoln, Nebraska to play Nebraska Wesleyan and Simpson. On the third weekend, they will host Ohio Northern and Emory.  The following weekend, they travel to Newport News to play Mary Washington and Christopher Newport as part of their break between first and second block.

They certainly have arranged for a schedule that ramps up pretty steadily in quality and degree of difficulty!

I don't normally post much news about the NORTH part of this thread (Region X is big enough for me), but I saw this and thought it was worth highlighting.

As some might know, Northland College, a tiny school in Ashland, Wisconsin, announced in mid-March that they were on the verge of foreclosure unless they received $12 million in donations in a couple of weeks.  They fell (far) short, but received enough in combination with a plan to cut courses and departments that they decided on May 1 that they were going to stay open

https://www.northland.edu/fund-a-new-northland-appeal/northland-college-to-remain-open-under-refocused-model/

Between the uncertainty this late in the Spring and the cuts that may have eliminated a major a student was pursuing, I expected some students would transfer.  I just learned where some are going.

University of Wisconsin River Falls is announcing its commits on Instagram.  So far, they have SEVEN transfers from Northland College

Jeffrey Olsen (rising Jr) (D) (played 18 games last year, starting 1)
Kellen Richardson (rising Sr) (M) (played 7 games last year, starting 2)
Sorel Richardson (rising Soph) (M) (played 17 games and started 14 last year - led the team in assists)
Garrett Sutton (rising Sr) (M) (played 17 games, starting 7 last year)
TJ Whisenhut (rising Jr) (GK) (played 6 games, starting 4 last year)
Victor Vancauteren (rising Soph) (F) (played 21 games, starting 13 last year and was third in goals with 4 and Honorable Mention all conference)
Logan Meyer (rising Sr) (D) (played 18 games last year, starting 6 games)

I couldn't find roster announcements for the other two brand new Wisconsin programs (Stout and Stevens Point), but I wouldn't be surprised to see some Northland transfers there too.  Northland wasn't a world beater last year (about .500), but they may be hurting just to field a viable team the whole season this year, especially if they lost most of their freshman recruits too

Cal Tech held its Spring Game today against LA Mission College, tying 4-4 against a pretty strong community college side.  They posted some highlights on their Instagram account

Here is their recap from the Instagram post:

QuoteGreat to have that game day feeling again! Here are your highlights from our Spring game against LA Mission College, ending in a 4-4 draw. The first goal came from some good possession by Tech moving the ball out to the right, then back to the left where Andy Dimnaku found Jack Myles at the top of the box who fired into the bottom corner. Dimnaku grabbed his second assist later after another switch to Alejandro Ortega Grisso. He played Dimnaku, who found Etienne Casanova at the top of the box this time, with his shot flying into the upper 90. Later Ishaan Mantripragada's corner found its way to Riley Coover at the back post, who took a touch and fired home from a tight angle. For the fourth, Ethan Feng was able to beat a couple defenders down the left and cut the ball back into the box, where Casanova was in the right place to grab his second of the game. Ethan Hamel, Alex Crowley, and Sam Mathews split time in goal for Tech, each with a couple saves. Well done boys!

For those curious about how Cal Tech held its Spring game so late in the year, Cal Tech is on the quarter system, so last day of classes for the Spring Quarter are on May 31. Fall Quarter classes didn't start until Sept 26 this past fall season, so they get a decent part of their schedule done before classes even start (although many of them are still working in labs for their summer jobs/internships)

Kuiper

In the spirit of Simple Coach's excellent post about interesting storylines for the 2024 season, here are my West region-themed additions to this list:

1. How do things shakeout in Texas this year and next?

After the dust settles on a bunch of conference affiliation changes taking effect this year and next, the American Southwest Conference will only have four teams (Mary Hardin-Baylor, Hardin-Simmons, East Texas Baptist, and Howard Payne). Concordia (TX), McMurry, and Ozarks are joining the SCAC this fall, Sul Ross State is gone to DII, with UT Dallas joining them next season, and LeTourneau has accepted a spot in the SCAC for Fall 2025. The rumor was that the remaining ASC four would affiliate with the Coast-to-Coast conference for all sports except football, but that seems to have stalled. It doesn't look like there's a pathway to join the SCAC, which now is filled with schools that left the ASC seemingly to get away from some or all of those schools. In part because of the lack of a football option for the so-called "Baptist Four," there is a real chance all of them leave DIII for DII or NAIA. That would be a big loss of DIII schools in Texas in just a couple year period.

In the meantime, will we be watching the final year of the ASC this season, with only 6 teams remaining (including LeTourneau and UT Dallas)

2. What will the effect of the House antitrust lawsuit settlement be on DIII and Region X?

This isn't a this season issue, but at some point the NCAA subsidy for DIII championships could dry up and that may have a significant effect on fees/travel/structure of the tournament. That could disproportionately hurt Region X teams, who count on the subsidy to enable them to travel to even the first round NCAA tournament sites, which are a flight away for at least two of the teams almost by definition. It's something to keep an eye on going forward.

3. Can Matt Corti-Young get things back on track at Willamette?

The school had a losing season for the first time since 2015 last year and they now have a new coach in Matt Corti-Young.  He joins from DI UCSD, but had a strong 5-year run as head coach of DIII Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before that, winning DIII West Region Coach of the Year in 2019 when he led the team to a 16-4-2 record and a loss in the third round of the NCAA tournament to Centre College. He comes in too late to influence recruiting for this year, so we'll see if he can make a difference with the players that he has inherited.

4. Can Ernesto Ramirez restore order at St. Thomas?

St. Thomas has always been a supremely talented and undisciplined squad of players and it finally blew up in their face last year in a major brawl against Texas Lutheran that ended with the coach being fired and many players suspended. They hired Coach Ramirez, an assistant at Occidental, to replace him. We'll see if he can get the players to cut down on cards, fighting, and general behavioral issues. If he can harness the competitive culture in a positive way, they have a ton of talent.

Ron Boerger

I don't believe UT-Dallas will be eligible for ASC or Division III championships. Their 2024-25 season will be similar to Sul Ross (D2 approval granted last summer) in the season just ended, where they will play in the ASC but results by or against them won't count.  That assumes their D2 application is approved in July - but it's hard to imagine anything but approval, given UT-D's size, financial strength, and academics.

Next year in Richardson will be kind of the "Who's Line is it Anyway" situation where everything is made up and the points (scores) don't matter.

Yes.  6 teams in the ASC, but not 6 for AQ purposes.  I think they could get immediate AQ status if the schools joined the C2C for next year, but that seems to be less likely at this point
