Sounds like something out of Righteous Gemstones.
Caltech

Kuiper spells it out like that 8 million times and you call me out?!?!

jk... thanks for the tip, did not know that...

FYI, they changed the Caltech - SCLU game to 9 am Friday because of the heat

I apologize for being picky, but this was a big deal a few years back on the basketball boards.

Not picky from my perspective, I like to be accurate.

(Apropos of nothing, I do a lot of writing/editing, so I have no issue with a correction. A local HBCU is Morgan State University and someone wrote an article about them that I edited and I corrected where they abbreviated the school to MSU... The school likes the shortened version to be "Morgan." So, Morgan students, not MSU students.)

Big-ish game from a national perspective and especially for this thread... UMHB @ St. Olaf this afternoon, 4:30 kickoff.

The Cru are struggling to get rolling to start the season with an experienced group and are 0-1-1 thus far against CTX and TLU. St. Olaf come into the game 2-1 with their only loss on the road to Chicago. Anyway, excited to watch any time a Region X team is facing the defending national champion, especially my own team!

0-0 at half. Oles with a slight edge in shots, 5-4. 1 a piece with shots on goal. Fairly even game so far.

UMHB takes the lead 1-0 in the 73'. Excellent counter attack and the ball finds the foot of freshman Drew Cooley for the finish.

UMHB concedes a PK late on and the attempt by Shea Bechtel goes over the bar. Crusaders hang on for the upset!

Huge win. Really impressive bounce-back performance for UMHB, who lost to Texas Lutheran just a few days ago. This is a dangerous team because of the depth and young talent on the roster. Excited to see them face CMS on Saturday.

A couple of early results out West:

Whittier 2 - UC Santa Cruz 2

Santa Cruz came into this game 2-0 after beating Pacific Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer, so this is a pretty good result for Whittier on the Banana Slugs' home field.  Having said that, Whittier was up 2-0 at halftime and let UCSC back in the game with a PK in the first couple of minutes of the 2nd half and the tying goal in the 70th minute.

University of St. Thomas 1 - North American University (NAIA) 0

First game of the season for UST, which is a bit odd, but helps explain some of their rust.  Tony Castro scored a great goal on a combination play with his older brother Daniel in the 6th minute, but after that UST seemed more focused on possession in the middle third of the field and had trouble putting anything together in front of their opponent's box. In perhaps a positive sign for UST under new Coach Ernesto Ramirez, they only had 1 yellow card and no red cards, which is pretty impressive for a program that earned 45 yellow cards and 7 red cards last season.

Caltech (trying to conform here!) 3 - Southern California Leadership University 1

In front of 7 hardy souls at 9 am in the heat in Pasadena, Caltech beat the mystical SCLU Rhinos and their Biblical Studies Kinesiology degree.  Caltech was up 3-0 until SCLU got a consolation goal in the 88th minute, which basically matched LaVerne's recent 3-0 win over SCLU.  Perhaps the best news is that Ishaan Mantripragada played 55 minutes and scored a goal, suggesting he'll be available for the Swarthmore game on Sunday morning, and they were able to heavily rotate their squad to keep everyone fresh (and upright!), with 26 players registering an appearance.  Halfway to the 6 win school record from last year.

Really surprised that SCLU game wasn't denoted as an exhibition given that they lack any true accreditation.

Agreed, but Caltech lists it as a regular game and has a 3-0 record, which has to include this game.

On the other hand, LaVerne lists it as an exhibition, but lists its record as 1-1, which has to include to SCLU game as a win, so who knows?

A couple of additional game updates involving Region X teams

At the half, Trinity leads Whitworth 1-0.  Whitworth is having trouble getting untracked and has had several offside calls in the first half as it tries to break out.

Concordia (TX) tied Christopher Newport 3-3.

Very unusual to have a game end in a 3-3 tie when one team (CNU) outshot the other 23-7 and had an 11-2 advantage on corners.  That usually suggests the team with fewer shots was bunkering, but in this game the two teams traded goals the entire game and Concordia was up 3-2 on a goal in the 78th minute until CNU scored the tying goal in the 82nd minute.  Big result for Concordia away. It now has two ties after tying Mary Hardin-Baylor, which beat St. Olaf 1-0 in Northfield, MN on Thursday.  It may be that the ASC (and recently departed ASC) teams are the class of Texas this year.
