Hosting priority has never been exclusively based on seed, but this regulation waived the requirement that geographic proximity take priority.  So, Colorado College could host a pod of teams from the NWC, ASC and one from the SCIAC, with Trinity hosting a second team from the SCIAC, the winner of the SAA, and the winner of maybe the SLIAC or USA South or perhaps even UAA since it's Emory I believe.  Colorado Springs would be closer for the NWC and SCIAC teams, which normally have to travel to Texas.

Management Council. The council approved a waiver of Bylaw 31.3.5.1 (b) that requires geographic proximity (i.e., the competition site is within 500 miles of the institution) to take precedent over seeding when constructing a championship bracket. The waiver allows flexibility for sport committees to ensure that top seeded teams do not face each other in the early rounds of championships. The waiver applies for up to two years to allow time for the impact of the change to be implemented and assessed.

SCIAC has handed out its All-Conference Awards

I might quibble with some of these.  I thought Glynn at GK did more with less at Chapman, while Brachman benefited from a better team and defense.  I also might have switched Notter and Mantripragadan at F, considering the latter was injured and on and off for much of the season and Notter scored more clutch goals. Rowan Slater might have been a stretch too.  Nevertheless, I don't think any of these were major errors. All were deserving.  Oury Diane is probably the most influential player left off.

In the past the NCAA would have happily flown them out even if they were the top seed in the country.  There is supposedly more flexibility this year but it's hard to say that there will be enough to fly three squads to the Springs.  We'll just have to see.

kansas hokie

This year, both Colorado College and Trinity (TX) will have the seed to host. The difference is Trinity will have another Texas team within 500 miles to drive to them. To make a CC pod, you would fly the two California schools to them as 3rd and 4th seeds in the pod, then fly out a midwest team as a #2 for the pod. However, that would then also mean flying two into Texas or two out of Texas so that's 5 flights already.

If you fly two teams into Texas and fly Colorado to another pod (I think it's in the South where no teams seed is high enough to be a top seed in a pod), then it may take only one more flight to complete the bracket. 4 flights total.

pretty sure the NCAA will choose 4 flights over 5 in first/second round brackets. Thus, I think Trinity hosts and Colorado College flys out but is top seed of a pod.

ASC semifinals today:

Mary Hardin-Baylor v. LeTourneau at 1 pm central  UPDATE:  Game pushed back to 2:45 pm because of weather delays

UMHB's reward for finishing first in the ASC is to play LeTourneau, which won the 4/5 game against Howard Payne on Tuesday.  Lest you think this is an easy game considering LeTourneau is 5-8-5 and UMHB is 10-6-2 and has beaten the likes of St. Olaf away early in the season, UMHB and LeTourneau tied 1-1 on 10/10 at UMHB in a game UMHB outshot LeTourneau 22-7.  On the other hand, in the rematch on 11/2, UMHB won 4-1.  I expect LeTourneau to try to replicate the first result by parking the bus and picking their spots to go forward.

Hardin-Simmons v. East Texas Baptist at 5 pm central  UPDATE:  Game pushed back to 8:45 pm central
UPDATE:  Moved to Friday at 7 pm central because of the weather

H-S has beaten ETBU 5-0 on 9/28 and 2-1 on 10/17.  I like H-S playing at home, but ETBU has heart and they won't roll over in this game.

This should be the more competitive of the two semifinals

SCIAC Tournament Semifinals Preview

Occidental v. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7 pm Pacific

If there's one thing we've come to expect when these two teams match up this season, it's goals.  CMS beat Oxy at home 3-2 and the two teams tied at Oxy 3-3.  In both games, CMS scored by pressing Oxy's GK at the top of the box into giveaways and Oxy scored on Andrew Notter's late runs into the box on set plays.  These also haven't been games where you could safely arrive/turn on your stream late.  Both games involved early Oxy goals, with Notter scoring in the 1st minute in the first game and Max Stanley scored in the 3rd minute at Occidental.  You can't step away too long at halftime either.  CMS' Heiko Schultz scored in the 48th minute in Game 1 and CMS' Collin Ross scored in the 49th minute in Game 2.  For this third game, I expect more of the same.  CMS needs to get Rafael Otero more involved and Oxy needs to get Oury Diane more involved.  Otero had zero shots in Game 1, but scored a goal on 4 shots (3 SOG) in Game 2.  Diane didn't play in Game 1, but scored a goal on 3 shots (all on goal) in Game 2.  Oxy also needs a better game out of GK Riley Nyhan, who has been shaky in some big games.

Chapman at Redlands 7 pm Pacific

These two teams only played each other once this season in the SCIAC's unbalanced schedule and Redlands won 1-0 at home back on 9/18.  Redlands outshot Chapman 16-6 in that game, but Chapman made things difficult for Redlands by committing 17 fouls.  Too much has probably happened since to read much into that result though.  Redlands is coming off of a bad 1-0 loss to Whittier in which it seems like they were still hungover from the excitement of beating CMS 4-2.  Chapman lost badly to Oxy, 4-0, before beating Cal Lu 2-1 in the play-in game.    I think Chapman's difficulty is that while they can play teams tightly and make things difficult for them, they have trouble scoring and the closest they have to a signature win is a 0-0 tie against Oxy.  It would be a major upset if they were to do so here, but the longer they can keep Redlands off the board, the more likely they test Redlands' patience, which could leave gaps open in the back.

Big upset in the ASC semifinals

LeTourneau 0 - Mary Hardin-Baylor 0 (LeTourneau advances on PKs)

UMHB outshot LeTourneau 22-9 and probably had a huge advantage on time of possession, but you have to put the ball in the net.  Lots of UMHB's passes were sloppy and intercepted and LeTourneau always had a ton of players behind the ball.  When UMHB had a really dangerous ball, like in the second half when an attacker somehow rounded his defender on the right side of the box and delivered a ball across the goal that went untouched, no UMHB player had attacked the far post to put it in.  LeTourneau hung around and made all of their kicks while their keeper made one strong save in PKs and UMHB's opening kicker missed after sending the keeper the other way.  UMHB is surely out even though it was the highest ranked ASC team in the NPI rankings at #75 (which means there won't be a bid "stealer" out of the ASC even with the upset).

CMS 2 - Occidental 1

This was a very even, hard fought, game before what sounded like a partisan Oxy crowd (complete with vuvuzelas) until half the CMS football team apparently showed up after practice ended.  In the first half, both goalkeepers made some fantastic saves as well as interventions on 1v1s and the teams went into the half tied 0-0.  CMS, however, came out aggressively in the second half and scored two goals within four minutes of each other, first in the 63rd minute on a great near-post run and flick off a cross by John Laidlaw into the near post and again in the 67th minute on a shot from Rafael Otero from the right side of the box to the far post.  Oxy was on the ropes, but they've been there before and Andrew Notter scored on a scramble in the box in the 76th minute.  To make things even more interesting, in the stoppage when the Oxy goal was scored, CMS replaced its goalkeeper, which I assume was because of injury and not because their starter let in the goal since the backup GK was already ready to go immediately. Nevertheless, Oxy couldn't take advantage and CMS was able to secure the win.

Chapman 1 - Redlands 1 (Chapman advances on PKs)

This was the big shocker of the evening, although it played out the way I suggested it might in my preview. Chapman had little offense, but fouled Redlands enough (16 to 8 for Redlands) to prevent them from getting into a flow offensively.  Chapman's lone goal came right before halftime on a free kick by Cormac Galvin.  Once they got that goal, Chapman parked the bus (or, since they are from the OC, it's probably apt to say they parked a couple of Cybertrucks) and ceded possession almost completely to Redlands.  It looked like the winning strategy as they repeatedly blocked Redlands' shots, intercepted their crosses, and frustrated their attempts to pass slip balls into the box.  With 7 seconds left on the clock, though, Redlands launched a hopeful ball into the far post area that wasn't cleared and Zach Darmanyan hit a seeing-eye ball from close range that made it through several defenders and went past the diving Chapman GK who had shifted over and dove in an attempt to make himself big.  Neither team could score in OT (to be fair, Chapman didn't even try as they took 0 shots in both OT periods and just played for PKs).  It ended up working as Chapman's keeper and some errant shots by Redlands won them the shootout.  My guess is that this knocks Redlands out, but I'm not positive how the tie will affect them.

The Finals will be Saturday night with Chapman traveling to CMS.  The last time the two teams played in mid-September, CMS won 3-0.

I don't typically engage with nonsense, but "all Cali teams"?? That out of the gate is disqualifying statement.

But to be specific, an average Swarthmore team flew out that way and beat Oxy (3-1) and Caltech (1-0) and Chapman came out east and lost to Stevens (2-1) and Montclair St (3-0). Cal Lutheran also traveled east and lost to an (at the time) floundering Messiah (4-0) and tied Gettysburg. (1-1).

So, I'm not great at math but 0-5-1 for the SCIAC teams... What are you actually talking about?

Re: the NCAA championship and the West, I'm no expert in D3 Soccer bracketology, but based on past brackets, I predict CMS will be sent to Trinity (Texas) for the first round. Trinity will have the #1 seed and will probably play someone like Pacific Lutheran. CMS will play the winner of the ACS, probably Hardin Simmons, but that is not a certainty. Assuming Trinity and CMS win their first games they will play each other in the second round.  That will be a game to watch because both teams are skilled and have crafty players on the ball. But more importantly, Ed Cartee was a long time assistant coach at Trinity before taking the job at CMS.
