Coach Jeff

I missed the Babson CG game saw it ended 3-0 for Babson.  Was it one sided or a competitive match?

Here are the new rankings for D3 men's soccer for Oct 4.  I'm not sure Willamette is really 7th (I'm not sure they are the best in the West even considering they tied Cal Lutheran and CMS), but they did win two games and Carnegie Mellon and Wesleyan both lost and Gustavus Adolphus tied Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Well, I stand by my opinion :-)

Seriously,  teams that didn't make the ncaa tournament ranked in the top 10, over a team that finished in the final four? How does that make any sense? What does Massey "think" is changing. One has a longstanding coach, the other doesn't.  Do you think Massey has some special insight into the incoming freshmen?!

I will eat my hat if Williams finishes the year ahead of Washington and Lee -- and I will do it on @simplecoach's YouTube channel to boot!

Just checking on the hat...

LOL.  Did you confuse Williams with Willamette (who also won't be ahead of W&L by end of season)?

Saint of Old

I hope someone confused Williams. Either that or learn about some football tradition and realize that Williams is one of the biggest names in D3 soccer history. Not many teams have won a National Championship been to other final 4s had a 400 game winning coach and one of the strongest alumni bases in the country. Again I'm sure it is a mix up.

Saint, I don't think it was a history question.  It was a question about whether Williams should be ranked ahead of W&L THIS year.  The poster today seemed to be implying that Williams IS ranked ahead of W&L and they are not.  Hence the comment about whether the poster saw the name Willamette and thought he read Williams.  I don't think any assessment of program credentials over the decades was implied.

Hopkins92

Actually, I think what's happening is Another Mom referenced the Massey rankings in her original post, not the USC rankings. I don't think BSF was necessarily confusing Williamette with Williams, but rather looking at Massey where Williams currently sits 23 and W&L is 22.

She's currently out of the hat eating business, but just barely!!

Good catch, Hopkins...although I think Another Mom has some wiggle room there.  When she wrote "eat hat if finish ahead of W&L at end of season" it's not entirely clear that she's referring to Massey there (especially since she already was questioning the legitimacy/accuracy of Massey from the jump....and since this back and forth happened in the USC rankings thread).

No better way to deal with Monday than some fine-grained textual analyses on a D3 soccer board!

jknezek

Nothing like a team that has managed to scrape together 4 wins out of 12 games being ranked in the top 25!

Saint of Old

Rankings really do not matter.
It is good for the alumni base and I guess bragging rights, but besides the ones just before the dance they are just for show. If anything it puts a bulls-eye on your back. Ask ConnCollege how nice having that bulls-eye is. I would much rather go under the radar, get a good regional ranking towards the end and then attack the dance.

Another Mom

I've been away from the board this morning  -- but the posters are correct, I was referencing *this* season alone. And made my comment because before the season Massey ranked Williams ahead of W&L.

I don't follow all the teams as closely as some of you, but I have a feel for the Williams team having seen them in person several times. My son's high school team even scrimmaged them 3 years ago. Plus I know a few of the players who played with or against my son. I think it's just a different program, at a different point than where W&L is today. That said, W&L this year isn't quite the team it was last year.

It will be interesting to see which poll/ranking ends up being more accurate by season's end for my Williams friend and I.

paclassic89

At this point, with the regional rankings coming out this week, these USC rankings are really meaningless.  They are useful earlier in the season to get an idea where teams stand.  W&L will be ranked ahead of Williams the rest of this season (barring an epic collapse)  and it won't be particularly close.  The reason Williams was ranked ahead of W&L in Massey to start the season is because historically they are the stronger program and they play in a tougher conference which boosts their SOS.  It's pure statistics.  There's 0 subjectivity to Massey's ratings

Shooter McGavin

Curious as to why the USC doesn't adopt the NCAA model for how many teams are ranked in each region. Does anybody know?

New Rankings for Oct. 17.  Calvin takes a big tumble from 9 to 19 after the 1-0 loss to Albion as does Johns Hopkins from 5 to 15 after the ties to Dickinson and Muhlenberg.  North Central's jump from 23 to 12 seems to reflect the strong performance after it tied North Park on Oct. 12, winning three in a row.
