Curious for those in the loop longer - is it mostly a summary of how last year's tournament shook out?

The link doesn't work for me, so they may have taken it down for the moment, but it generally is a reproduction of the year-end post-tournament poll or how the tournament finished.  So, Chicago, Williams, etc.   

The preseason polls to watch will be the ones conferences do for just the teams in their conference.  Coaches usually have the best sense of what is going on in terms of comings and goings among their conference opponents (which isn't to say they get it right in terms of how things finish).  Those usually come out at the end of August, right before the season begins.  Here are some examples:

The USC pre-season poll is literally just the final year-end poll released in December 2022.  Messiah fell to 12th at that time because they lost in the 2d round of the tournament to Williams.

The final ranking from Dec. 2022 on the USC site is not there anymore, but see this ONU press release from then that reproduces that ranking.  It is identical to this year's pre-season ranking.

So, we can disagree with how the coaches voted last fall, but this pre-season ranking is not how coaches think the teams rate going into this season based on anything that happened in the off-season.  It is not the result of a coaches vote at all.  It should be re-printed as a reminder of last year's final poll, not called a pre-season poll.  That's why I mentioned earlier in this thread that if you want coaches' views about how teams rate going into the season, you should check out the conference polls released at the end of August.
