Quote from: stlawus on October 23, 2024, 06:41:17 PMIt's difficult going from a conference like the NAC to the SUNYAC so there is a grace period, but SUNY Canton has got to figure something out on the recruiting trail this offseason.  Through 8 league games they have been outscored 28-0.

Beyond that, they don't even get shots on goal. They aren't even remotely competitive.

That is a tough conference. Do you think they joined to make an attempt to attract a higher caliber student-athlete?

They will be competing with SLU, Clarkson, Potsdam and Plattsburgh that's a tough sell....

Wanting to attract higher caliber student-athletes is part of it, but travel also played a big factor. Morrisville has found a way to compete on the national level in sports like basketball and baseball, I think they'll be fine.  Canton also is trying to elevate their academic standing which has increased pretty sharply in the last 10 years.  The SUNYAC brand definitely helps in that regard, which of course brings us full circle to attracting better athletes.  I think they have the capability to do it, their AD is a SLU alum who knows what it takes to compete in that type of conference.  Looking back at what they were even 7 or 8 years ago you can see a pretty remarkable improvement in the athletic department.  But they'll need to really lean into the changing landscape of higher ed by using their low cost of education and top programs like criminal justice and homeland security to get the athletes that teams like Plattsburgh normally get.

Ultimately, this all may be rendered moot in the not so distant future if Canton and Potsdam end up finally merging.   That came close to fruition in 2012 so it's not hard to think it will happen given the state of higher ed.

Looking at NPI again, pretty good chance for 3 bids out ofthe SUNYAC. 4 is probably stretch given Oneonta's current standing. But Plattsburgh beating New Paltz this weekend should put them firmly on the right side of the bubble if they don't make it any further. Same goes for Cortland.

I honestly could see Plattsburgh making the run through the AQ with all that experience in the lineup. Given what I saw yesterday their tactical setup is pretty well suited for their opponents going forward.

New Paltz back 4 match up well with the Platts offense. I fully expect this to be a tight one goal match 1-0 or 2-1.....possibly overtime.

New Paltz beat Plattsburgh in a shootout in the SUNYAC quarterfinal. After a 2-2 game and scoreless overtime, New Paltz won the shootout 5-4 to advance to a semi-final matchup with Buffalo early next week.

Brutal way for Plattsburgh's seniors to end their season. From the games I've seen  New Paltz has a bit of that "dawg" in them as they say, they can grind results.   I expected Plattsburgh to make some noise in the league tournament especially with getting a home game, but soccer is a cruel sport. Pretty good foundation laid with that program, I expect them to be back in the thick of things next year even with their graduation losses.

Tough for Platts to lose especially after outplaying NP for most of the Match. They ran out of gas after first OT.

NP gifted Platts their first Goal, NP CB pass right to a Platts player who drove forward and buried it.

Both NP goals were controversial

First goal  offensive player appeared to climb over defenders back on and  in second Platts MF appeared to be tripped/grabbed as he dribbled at midfield lost the ball and NP countered with two quick passes and a goal.
First looked more egregious

With this loss, tie for NPI purposes, doubtful Platts has enough now to get in NCAA as an open bid.

How does Cortland, who won the SUNYAC and had several incredible wins get such an unfavorable draw? Messiah and Williams is quite a gauntlet and for me is the toughest pod in the tournament.

Cortland will likely be a solid team next year like they always are, but a first round exit for this group has got to feel very disappointing, especially since they got one of the worst draws for their first round pod.  They started eight 5th years and seniors, with 3 of these players accounting for 39 goals and 13 assists. In the post covid era Axtell has been able to retain a lot of these players year to year who seemingly never ran out of eligibility, but with this being the last season for covid year eligibility the roster is going to have turnover now.
