I thought I would share this with everyone as I have been meaning to for quite some time.   It was written by an athlete at Cornell College in Iowa, (not sure when), but paints a pretty good picture of what most everyone here experienced.... enjoy:

Why We Play Division III Athletics

It's not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter.  It's a deep need in us that comes from the heart.   We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat.   We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don't even know.   We don't practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent.   We don't lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor.  We don't run with a future Wimdeldon champion; we run with a future CEO.  It's a bigger part of us that our friends and family can understand.   Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans, sometimes 25.   But we still play hard.   You cheer for us because you know us.   You know more than just our names.  Like all of you, we are students first.   We don't sign autographs.  But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams and student body petitions.   When we miss a kick or strike out, we don't let down and entire state.  We only let down our teammates, coaches and fans.   But the hurt is still the same.  We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class.   And in that class we are nothing more than students.  It's about pride in ourselves, in our school.   It's about our love and passion for the game.   And when it's over, when we talk off of that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble.  Those tears are for real.  But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves.   We will forever be what very few can claim... college athletes.

************************************************************************************************

I hope you enjoyed.

I assume that Fisher has been favored in every AU game the last several years.  It just seems that sometimes we give you guys more than you bargained for.  You may wax us this year, but  I was really just curious about serious looks at this year's game.  There has been a lot of good input.  I thank all responders for the thoughts.  I think if we stop turning the ball over (a big if) we can make a game of it.

On Saxon Warriors

Special Teams, particularly Francis, will be the difference in this week's game between Fisher and Alfred.  It was the difference in last year's contest and it will be again this year.   Fisher loves to attack the perimeter on offense and it's no secret..... Alfred is a very disciplined football team, but if they think they can get away with a single high safety.....game over.  On the other hand, if Fisher can't get pressure on Secky with their front 4..... Put it in the books.   It will be a battle.... This is why we love college football.

I wouldn't ever doubt Murrays defensive capablilites.  And in response to that, Alfred does not try to get away playing with a single high safetyL.  If they do have a single F/S, its generally not a traditional 4-4 Sky coverage.  It would most likely be a man under, 1 free or zone blitz combination.  Alfred predominantly is a 4-3 team.  They like to play Cloud, a 4-3 that rolls to a 4-4 combination at the snap of the ball but rarely do they line up with a single high safety and if they do, they don't expect to win that way.

He knows his stuff and I would never doubt him.   I was impressed with their D play the past two years and with their results when they brought pressure. And Manzer was thorn in Fisher's side when he was on D.

Sax 8
you are very right about more hype about this team.
i remember listening to a game very early this season---might have even been the bport game and i remember both Pete and Gene saying that (on paper) this was the most talented team in Fisher history and that 10- 0 is feasible.
Now that it is within grasp- this team is showing that it is living up to the hype.
I know Hartwick isnt great- but they gave IC and others fits and while the O seemed to "sputter" they still dropped 41 on em.

P
Its a little harder for me lately to stay on top of all this. I used to watch films of every game and I would be able to see other teams offense.  (I would be watching Hartwick's D and it would be tape from the Fisher game etc.)  So I had a good idea of who was executing well and so on.  But its hard for me to just hear names of these players and match them up to the likes of Kramer, Stepnick,
Farenbach, Robinson etc... Cause to me, those were some incredible teams.  So it's a little bit of ignorance because I haven't gotten a chance to see these kids play yet.

Those Fisher teams were incredible teams, no doubt.  It was my opinion ( and still is ) that , collectively, this the most talent that Fisher has put on the field at the same time in the history of the program.   There is a swagger to this team that I have never seen; it is pretty palatable in pre-game.  Its definitely not cocky....it's confident.... Confident in their ability and they trust in each other.   Last year, Alfred had that same swagger prior to the Fisher game.  It's going to be a woodshed brawl Saturday.

One of the most glaring improvements in the D is Fox's ability to make changes at halftime.
In prev. years- there was no ability to adjust....A credit to Fox and his ability to grow as a D coordinator and be able to read what the O is giving him then create a scheme to defend it.

Amen!

Pat, mix in a trip to a Fisher game when they are NOT playing Mount Union. Did you WATCH the game, or do you just go off of stats on paper?

Hi, and welcome to the board. Did you go to the Wartburg-Coe game, or are you just going off stats on paper?

Pat.. I didn't have to be when its on demand on Coe's website. http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/coe.portal#

Wartburg played a much more impressive team.  That's what he is saying.  They beat a team that was in the top 10.  That holds a lot of weight.  Much more than beating Hartwick.

It does, and while I agree, I just don't see how a team goes downstream... if nothing else keep them at 18.  There really is not a science behind this stuff if you're going off of record and statistics.

It is nice to see the Fisher D coming together. I was not able to watch or listen to the game yesterday, but from what I have seen on here, it looks like the D played well, and the offense scored a bunch of points without having the offense's best day. I was worried about the D early in the year, but they have had a few strong games in a row now. 8 picks against any team is a solid day. I am getting more and more excited about Fisher's chances for a deep run in the playoffs.

I was not able to see the AU game either, but does anyone who was at the game have a rundown on what went wrong?

The defense is heading into Alfred with a lot of momentum and, most importantly, confidence.   A confident defense is a dangerous defense.

The stat of the year so far is Fisher's defensive dominance on 3rd down. In the last four games, Fisher's D has allowed opponents to convert on 3rd down on only 11 of 51 tries.  21.5%.  That is difficult to accomplish at ANY level.

To me, last night was Fisher's worst offensive performance of the year in terms of sustaining a rhythm and a groove......the swagger was absent.....but they still put up over 400 yards resulting in 41 points.   This offense has yet to peak, even with the gaudy numbers between Bailey, Borum and The Ryan Express.

The NCAA record for INTs in a game is 10.  Fisher dropped two INTs last night but came up with 8....two shy of tying the record.   Eight INTs is mammoth result in Madden on Playstation not to mention a college football game.  Congrats to that defense.

Alfred looms.
