Many out there doubt Chapman belonged this year. Chapman just played Chapman baseball when it had to and overcame some key major injuries to have a outstanding post season run.

Congrats to a great 2009 season.

"Oh ye of little faith"
I had my doubts about Chapman... I really did not think that they could get past Pomona Pitzer.  They rallied, dug deep, and fought hard to make it to the World Series.  They came into Appleton limping and it was a true miracle that they went as far as they did.  BUT THEY BELIEVED!!!

You see, they lost  KEY players half way through the season.  Their ace pitcher and their starting catcher both went down.  At the same time, their backup catcher injured his knee.  He finished the season playing in a brace with a torn ligament.

Believe me, most of you thought Farmingdale was the Cinderella team, but in our eyes this Chapman team was.

Good job guys, we are all so proud of you...... I will miss watching you play..    remember "strike, strike, strike", "hit, hit, hit",  "third",  keep it going ;)

A.G. - thanks for the link and info.

They sure don't give much love to D3.  They could have said a little more. But I guess some love is better than no love :)

AG, that list was released by Baseball America on Jan 29th, 2008.

We are probably two weeks away from the release for 2009.

Thanks for bringing it up!

Does anyone who if the 2009 list has come out yet or should we look for it this weekend??

I would agree with RSSmith regarding Chez Angeloni. He will definitely one of the nation's best pitchers and I am stunned he has not been mentioned more.

He was undefeated last season, and finished the season with consecutive victories over
               Salisbury
               Chapman
               Trinity,CT

No other pitcher in the country has wins like that to their resumes, much less in consecutive starts, much less on the big stages of the Regional Championship game, 2nd Round of the World Series, and the national Championship game.

This guy has to be at the top of the list

Good point....I think thats why Hopkins is ranked so high in the pre-season poll even though they lost so many seniors from last years team.  If they were to put a note next to why they ranked the teams as they did his name would be there as one of the reasons.  The way you see it he should win just about all his starts and out a 40 game season thats a lot of W's.

He played summer ball in the Texas Collegiate League - here are his stats:

W  L    ERA   G  GS CG  SHO SV    IP      H    R    ER  HR  BB  SO   AVG
ANGELONI, CHEZ  1   3   5.50   8   6   0      0   1   36.00   41   27  22   2   16   30   .275

http://www.texascollegiateleague.com/stats/08season/

Do these stats and his normal season stats indicate being voted #1?

I will try to do a little research and find out how the other nominees faired in summer ball later today.  UNLESS someone already has this data and can post it.

My biggest surprise was no JOE DEVLIN of Lynchburg, on any of the teams, after being 2nd Team AA SP last year as a Junior.  I guess folks are not yet believers since he does not rack up the high K #'s...but again, neither did Maddux.  Joe is a similar type pitcher.
Devlin is kinda fish/kinda fowl.  He went 8-0 in 16 games with 3 saves.  He only pitched 55 innings.  ERA was good at 0.98, but he allowed 43 hits and 12 walks in those 55 innings.

Kitchens' ERA was 0.31; Booher went 11-1 and started 14 games; Bayer (Trinity CT) went 7-0 (ERA1.14, WHIP 0.85) in the regular season for the champs.

Thanks for making my point...Devlin compares very favorably over Bayer.  Yes, Devlin pitched only 55 IP...but was the team's CLOSER the first 1/4 of the season last year.  Either young man is very worthy...and this way....Devlin does not have to live up to any preseason hype meaning less pressure on him.

Being selected is an honor, but also carriers a lot of pressure with it; your teammates, coaches, parents, and fans always expect you to always shine – you're not allowed to have a bad game.  However, what they seem to sometimes forget, the players are also college students that attend school, study, some work and then you have the long bus ride to the game.

And when you're not at 100% - that's when the other 8 guys step in and help pick you up.  With Devlin being a pitcher, he is going to need all of his teammates support - key catches, covering the hole up the middle, and a catcher who is a brickwall.

AG - he will have no pressure - and he can go out and show all of them that he is a stud.... I wish him good luck.

No players drafted on the first day :)

Free agents can negotiate their own contract.  If fact you have greater freedom since you can negotiate with all teams, not just one.  Of course if a team thought you were on their top 50 players they can get, you would have been drafted.

No player has to sign a contract.  If the deal is not acceptable, you dont sign.  It really is the same for any of us.  All jobs I have had I applied knowing the pay was acceptable or was able to negotiate a higher rate.

CONGRATS to all players that were drafted!!!! -  Now we will see how many get picked up as Free Agents

More D-III players will sign free agent contracts than get drafted.  With the draft limited to 50 rounds, there is lots of room for free agent signings.

How does being a free agent work?  Do they get any of the same benefits as if you are drafted  ie.. signing bonus, if Jr., possible help with college tuition, same monthly salary?

GOOD LUCK TO ALL D3 PLAYERS IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS!!!!!! Some players will be very excited and then there will be some with broken hearts.  All of these kids (young men) will have GREAT STATS, but only a select few will be able to continue.

I was at the CWS and i was not impressed by some of the names i've heard this year. After seeing Yacko i thought he was effective but not overpowering. I was no more impressed with his slider than righty stoper from Kean Brandon Aich's slider. Yet Yacko showed he was a great athlete and competitor and i think he will get drafted after senior year. I was dissapointed with kitchens and i am surprised he had the #s he had with his underdeveloped stuff. It seemed to me that Kitchens had poor control of a high 80s fastball and not much else. Has Yacko been coming in all season to save Kitchens from letting up runs and keeping his ERA down? I don't see Kitchens going to the next level.

Tim Kiely's poise and control impressed me most. I expected a little more in terms of velocity but his control of 2 plus pitches impressed me. I don't know about his experiences over the summer but he should be a sure 15 - 20 round draft pick after sr. year.

Hopkins startes Zacarria and tournament most oustanding player Angeloni impressed me with thier stuff despite having rather poor numbers. Zaccaria had great size and arm action to go along with his 14Ks - very impressive. Angeloni was very confident on the mound and had a great slider sinker combo. He showed some real good pop at times and proved to be a great competitor.

Only Hopkins and WW bats impressed me with next level talent. Emr from hopkins has great size and easy power. I was expecting a better performance from Fester who was returning from a knee injury this post season but i already know from his jr year and play in the Texas Collegiate League that he is one of the best DIII hitters in the country. Pietroforte from Hopkins showed a great and clutch arm in the postseason and has great tools.

Johnson and Zalnis were impressive bats for Whitewater. Johnson especially proved himself to be a next level talent as he was extemely coonfident at the plate.

Finally, i was most dissapointed with the lack of professional baseball scouts present to witness the top DIII teams compete...

ACE - Hopkins does have some GREAT players and I'm sure that you are proud to be associated with them - but please research others before posting - READ BELOW

Quoted from "The Association of Division III Independents"

For the second year in a row, Kurt Yacko, a junior from Costa Mesa, CA, was named the player of the year after he hit .344 with 10 home runs and 47 runs batted in. Yacko also led all of Division III in earned-run average (0.57) and saves (15). He was 6-0 and had 71 strikeouts in 61 innings. Just yesterday, Yacko was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-America first team.

Wayde Kitchens, a junior right-hander from Oceanside, CA, was named the pitcher of the year after posting a 9-0 record with a 1.10 ERA and three shutouts. He also was named to the ABCA All-American first team. Despite missing most of the first six weeks of the season with a shoulder injury, Kitchens finished with a fury as he recorded 70 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings and ranked in the top five in earned-run average. Kitchens finest moment came earlier in the season when he fanned a school-record 17 in a game against Dallas.

In regards to the scouts - It would of been nice if more were there.  But they have followed  a lot of these players all season long and have already "seen" what they wanted to see.  They were off watching DI and DII games since their season starts later than DIII.

........
As for arms, I cannot imagine any twenty something year old telling a coach that he could not or would not take the field for his team in any competition, much less a game that leads to a title.  As I posted before, Oates would have taken the mound without a moment's hesitation if Scannel would have allowed it.  Oates is a great kid, is intensely loyal and most probably considered it worth the risk to throw on short notice in order to carry his team to a title.  The important thing is the coach did not call on him to take the risk even though he knows Oates prepares extensively and was probably ready for the challenge.  Whether Oates ever plays for pay or not (and I understand he might), he will still have to live with his arm for the rest of his life.   While I am versed in risk/reward processes I do not understand anyone that claims the risk to the long term health and well being of an amateur player is worth the reward of living vicariously through them to enjoy a victory from the stands.......

The coach is the one in charge - they know from experience what the long-term effects are by having them throwing too many innings too fast.

McMurry has a beautiful stadium -and so does Linfield College in Oregon  //http://www.linfield.edu/sports/venues/helser.php

Both of these are stadium style fields - and from I hear Chapman might be upgrading their field also.
So  move it around to make everyone happy - just give a FEW months notice so the families can make hotel reservations.  WHICH IS A NIGHTMARE on short notice (current problem in Appleton - no rooms available ANYWHERE in town).
